It's a bench block. All sorts of shapes and sizes available--hundreds of shop uses--often used when driving pins out of shafts and frequently used in firearm disassembly for driving out pins as well.

What Tim said. That's a nice one. I have several that are parts from old piston style hydraulic pumps. Indispensable for some applications.
