Vintage Montgomery Ward generator

Has Briggs engine. Engine in poor condition. How is the engine attached to the generator? I would like to run the generator with another engine via a belt and pulley. Can’t figure out how they a attached.

Not that easy to do, unless you have the equipment and a lot of time! Might be better to try to fix the engine. I may have one like it, really heavy, only 1500 watt, and burns oil. I keep it at the cabin, use it occasionally. I thought I had a picture of it, but can't find it in this damn computer!

I have an old Sears 2000 watt gen with the 5hp Briggs. I think the gen has no bearing on the pro side. The engine has a bearing on the PTO and that is what supports the armature in the gen. It has a tapered shaft on the gen so really no extra shaft to work with. Might be rather difficult to do what you want to do if it is anything like my sears.

If the engine is not repairable you could remove the connecting rod and piston, put a pulley on the crank where the recoil/rope pull start is, and run the generator that way.

I have a 4000 watt Montgomery Ward belt driven generator. I use it several times around here, through out the summer.

Not practical to do that, there is no front bearing on the generator, a special taper shaft on the motor.

You might find a Predator motor with a taper shaft and c face bolt pattern. That's a common generator design to this day.

Still a big gamble not knowing the generator is good.

Yes I thought about that.. probably no bearing in that end of generator...uses the crankshaft for support. You guys answered my question. Thx for sharing.

ere's a link to a company that sells tapered crankshaft engines: https://www.powerequipmentdirect.com/outdoor/tapered-crankshaft-engines.html

I should add that I made an adapter once to put on a tapered crankshaft and run the alternator from a pulley. You need a lathe and to be good at doing the math to get the taper right.

hould say tapered input shaft.

Russ from MN,

It may be an easy fix. Check the crankcase breather if it has one. When the clog up, it will have crankcase pressure, which will make it burn oil. Just a thought,

Guido.
