Welding Torch

I need to get an Oxygen/acetylene welding torch. I have a good Victor cutting torch etc. but it is just a H/D cutting torch. I do very little cutting welding and it is for periodical work at home/workshop. I do not want to spend hundreds of dollars on a good quality one plus I only need the torch and tips and not a set with everything in it.My question is has anyone used the Harbor Freight Torch and tips as I can buy them all for around $100 ? Any info. good or bad would be appreciated. Thank you from Britman

ou could save a lot of money using propane instead of acetylene.

Heating yes, gas welding you can’t use propane.

My experience has been any money saved using propane over acetylene is spent on oxygen.

I wouldn't buy something like that from HF, actually, I avoid HF like the plague.
Try ebay for used Victor components.

So from your post, do you need tanks, gauges, hoses or do you have that. You say you have a cutting
torch, but you need a welding tip. You might check ebay for lots of tips. I bought a lot of stuf for
my Victor. Be patient.

If I understand your question, all you need is a mostly called a brazing tip. You really need to take your torch
into a welding store and they will sell you a new tip. I say to take yours into the store, because the sets come
in three sizes most of the time, and they will not interchange. The cutting head comes off and the brazing tip
screws on. They will need to know what you want to do so they can sell you the right size for your needs.

Stay out of Harbor Freight. It's a fool's paridise and someone you know
might drive by and see you coming out and get the wrong impression. Show
everything you already have to someone familar with torches. Tell them what
you want to do with a torch so they can tell you what to buy. As someone
alrready said, sound's like all you need is a couple of tips.

Our local big scrap yard cuts up railroad engines with A 2500 gal lp tank and a small semi trailer with I think 9 liquid oxygen tanks.

To centerplate, I will need tanks but I have put off buying them from online as I have heard that some places will not fill them if the tanks are not theirs. I have Victor gauges, Victor hoses and a Victor cutting only torch so I need either a combination torch and tips or a dedicated welding torch with tips. I bought these used and local to me at a good price. My funds are limited and I only need something for occasional use without too much expense. Regards from Britman.

Since your Victor torch doesn't take brazing tips, you're free to go with any brand. I have no experience with the HF torches, but Smith, Victor and Harris all have excellent reputations and are usually carried by local suppliers.

How heavy of work do you intend to do? If you're only going to do light brazing and gas welding, I recommend the Miller (nee Smith) AW1A torch, aka "Versa Torch". I love mine.

Yes, and that volume of oxygen is a lot cheaper than buying it one 120 cu ft cylinder at a time. Really, for scrapping, propane is the gas to use. Less slag, and you can cut through multiple pieces of iron at once. But most scrappers are not worried about the quality of their cuts.

Compared to what tanks will cost, the torch and tips are minor. Why buy a
nice saddle and bridle(oxy & acety tanks) then put them on a donkey(HF
torch)?
Seriously,it's not as simple as you think getting the right equipment.
If you tell us "exactly"what you want the torch to do (filler, base
material ect),we can at least come closer. And tell us where you are
located so that someone in that area can tell you how and where to have
bottles filled. Airgas,Praxair have a monoply in some areas and will only
fill bottles rented from them. Contrary to what some have said, you might
be able to use propane which is inexpensive to set up and use if your
tasks don't demand acety.

DA Bees, Replying to your post, I am only going to use the torch for light occasional welding for myself and not commercial use.I have an old Ford NAA Tractor and the tin work needs some welding that I cant do with my arc welder.Other than that it will not get used much and will just be here if needed so to speak. I live in Otto, North Carolina and I haven't even checked on a gas supplier in the area yet so any input would be greatly appreciated. I was going to go for one of the portable kits but I didn't like the tank size and figured I would just buy a bit at a time and so I bought this Victor H/D cutting set at a reasonable price even if it is overkill and now I need the welding torch and tips.I am not a welder by trade but I can get by doing what I can. Regards from Britman

Check with the places that sell gas. My tanks are from a local supplier, I paid about $150 for
lifetime lease on my oxygen bottle and I can turn it in and get my money back when I'm done for
good. I use propane on mine. Takes longer to cut heavy metal but works, I sometimes braze with the
cutting head turned down low, just be sure not to hit the lever!!!

I would look on Craigslist.
You might find just the torch. As said,
Victor, Smith and Harris are great brands.
Or go to the place that sells the gas. My
local welding supply outfit sells some used
stuff too.

I have just ordered a new Victor with two welding nozzles.Thank you everyone for your input.Britman
