Speaking of paint brushes

I didn't want to hijack UD's post below.

Here's a paint brush that I found laying on U.S. Route 51 about two miles north of Dongola, Illinois. It was laying in the drip lane and hadn't been ran over. I thought it was interesting - it's the only one like it that I've ever seen in person.

It has a little paint residue on the handle, but whoever owned it was real good at cleaning the bristles. I assumed a professional painter left it on his bumper and dribbled it off onto the road.

Stephen - you mentioned Cairo. Did you know a man named Comer Phillips?

It's called a "radiator" brush, for home heating type radiators, I assume.

But they have been adapted for all types of odd places that need painting. They come in all kinds of shapes and angles.

Looks like ship engine rooms are a major demand.

I have a similar one , though the bristles angle forward much as if you bent the fingers of your hand forward . It's used for reaching the face of eaves under guttering and other awkward places with overhangs . I dont use it much but when I do it's a real boon .

I was thinking it might have been used by a road crew for touch up work on painting stripes. They can stand off to the side to help stay away from traffic.

BC - I worked on a road crew. I'm certain that it wasn't used for striping. Highway striping paint is super fast dry stuff, and not really suitable for brush work. The paint remnants on the handle appear to be latex house paint. I doubt if I will ever use it - it's a conversation piece in my shop.

Thanks for all of the ideas. Radiator brush makes sense. This thing is a 3" brush, and the overall length is 34". I originally thought it would make a good brush to paint soffits, but all of my soffits are aluminum.

(quoted from post at 09:38:50 01/30/21) Must be for cleaning the aluminum fins in baseboard boiler systems. I could use one of those for sure.

Amazon has many, including some specifically for cleaning, and some for painting. A 2 pack of paint brushes like the photo in the thread is 10 bucks.
