I'm trying to bench test a windshield wiper motor. Can I jumper the leads to a 12v battery? Red, green and black leads. Which is hot, high and low speed. Not intermittent type. Can I burn something if it's hooked up wrong. Vehicle wiring diagram NA, waiting for advice.

You might tell us what vehicle it's from (or don't you know) as I doubt there's any consistent color scheme across various makes and models.

But (FWIW) I did find one sort of generic diagram showing BLK as "park" (gets power as long as ignition switch is "ON"), RED as "HI", GRN as "low". Ground would be through the mounting bolt(s).

And YES you can "let the smoke out" if connected wrong.

If "testing" from a car battery I would have s 5 or 10 Amp fuse in the power lead to prevent that.

And keep your fingers out of the way, if there's any lever or linkage attached so if it DOES take off it won't take them off!
 
Not knowing what motor was used on International, you can search "wiper motor wiring diagram", try to find one that looks like your motor. It will probably be a Delco, but that is just a guess.

There are several to choose from, some even have test procedures.

Be careful, wiring it wrong will ruin it.
 
Cannot recall the wire colors now. But that's exactly how the 3 wires from the wiper motor on my '68 IHC pickup worked.

Probably not much different than my 50 and 57 chevys with the vacuum wipers. Had to let off the gas to see through the windshield in a thunderstorm. Pulling out from a stop sign was driving blind and then a moment of fast wipers when shifting gears.

Never could figure out what was wrong with the 50 chevy voltage regulator when the headlights would turn off after 10 or 15 minutes. Dated my wife in that thing and always got stuck out on a country road waiting for the lights to come back on. Told her if she knew how to fix it then more power to her otherwise we find something to do while waiting.
 
Thanks all for the help. Figured it out today. The first of carlmac's links provided the answer. It checked out with the ohmmeter. Still can't figure out how it's grounded. All three leads are hot at some point, one all the time. Case must be grounded to the body.

You have just figured out what it took me several tries to figure out. Built this 78 scout out of 4 more , about a 5 year project, have parts if you need any.

Don't need any, trying to sell off what I have left. Started a glass body project years ago, never completed. Sold the body kit, rolling chassis and two I had for parts. Still have all the little stuff that was to go back in it. Let me know if you need anything.
 
On my 64 IH pickup the case is the ground and one wire is low one is high and the third is the park position.
 
I saw this post and thought Id tell you about my S10 the wipers quit on it . It was getting power to it - but it lost its ground . Even though it was bolted to firewall . I took a star washer and sheet metal screw bared a spot on the firewall then put a eye in the wie and attched it to motor. After I did that worked good
