Actually should be able to as it should have a circuit breaker. Probably took out the rectifier. A lot of the old style chargers use the same or a similar rectifier which is available on line. I replaced the one in my solar charger with a better design. I had previously replaced the diodes and some of the wires in the old rectifier system. The diodes were from a alternator shop the wires and push on connectors from an appliance repair shop.
