Welding table pic

I thought I would post this pic here since so many gave me such good advice in looking at welding tables. The top is 3/8" which is the thinnest I would consider. I looked at a lot of brand new 3/16" tables up to 1/4" but passed on them all. This one has some really big steel casters. Must be 2-3" width on them and it rolls nicely with some effort. 48" square top. Weighs enough that the tractor was a little tippy with it on the forks but we got it into the shop and wiped the snowflakes off the top. It was $150 and I figured for that price I could put thicker top on it some day and still be doing good. It has four clean holes where a vice was mounted on the corner. Drove thru a lot of mud to get there but took a different route home. That's why the table is clean but the trailer is such a mess.

Dave H ........ Nice welding table. Especially for $150. Put a vise on it and you're in business. Wingnut

Nice one. I think you got a deal. I recall that when Pop took welding at our school shop, that at the time offered farmers the class at night, they all built their own tables as their project. That's been a while. Seem like he said the entire cost was $100 which included the class, new Lincoln "tombstone" welder, helmet, mitts, rod, and steel for the table. 1965 or so. gm

I have a Lincoln tombstone I bought at a pig farm auction 20 ago. Tried to teach myself to weld...no manual, no youtube, no classes, no forums, and a helmet that was dark 100% of the time. High on my stupid list and a complete fail. I now have a Lincoln MIG, really good helmet and a lot of resources. I am hoping to succeed this time. :)

Sounds like your still needing to learn. If your not far from me, if so maybe I can help you out some.

Might take you up on that. I have to wait until Spring now as I have 7 day a week work for the next couple months. What part of the state you from?

Southwest of Lansing, near Potterville.
I'm retired and not doing much, especially with this nnalert.

Back when I was in the Navy I sort of lived up your way. I say sort of because the Navy says your home is where you parents are. I did visit my parents in MI and when my parents left MI they also left a Ford Fairlane behind which I had towed with me

I bought this table from a nice kid over SW side of Lansing. He did some work for someone who could not pay him, so they gave him the table and a few other odds and ends. He was pretty happy to get the money. I am over in the Howell area.

You do remember I am a welder by trade, don't you, Dave? I have said I would be happy to help you. Let me know...John

Honestly John...I did not remember. Too much going on I guess. I can't believe all the changes I have to deal with this season. I am averaging 4 hours a day in webinars.

This was ancient when I got it to learn on 50 years ago. Still my go to stick welder. I gave the Lincoln Tombstone to my son last summer when he wanted a welder. Best thing they ever invented was the self darkening helmets.

Back when I was 16 a magazine had ads for a Lincoln welder. Found out after I got it it was not a true Lincoln welder. It did weld and I did learn to weld with it. When in the Navy one of my buddies was a hull tec. so I learned a bit more from him. I have since worked as a welder and I can do stick mig, and tig plus gas weld

Similar to my late FIL's Marquette which I still use weekly. I also have my fathers evens older Birdsell that uses a lever (handle?) on the top to adjust amperage. It's kind of nice because it's infinitely adjustable, no limit to the amps, if you need 93 amps and not 90 or 95 you can get it.

My youngest son is in the welding course at our local vo-tech school and they will be getting rid of a mess of older welders soon. I have my eye on a Lincoln Idealarc! That would be quite a step up from an AC buzzbox! The kid is trying to talk me into a plasma cutter for our automotive work on old Jeeps and such. As my FIL used to say, "Your wants will make you poor!"

Dave H. (MI); You will succeed this time. GMAW (MIG) welding is very easy to do, but not quite so easy to do well. MIG welds are notorious for looking great without actually being good welds because of inadequate penetration. You can prevent this from happening, for the most part, by doing destructive testing on your practice welds. Either saw your welded pieces apart perpendicular to the weld so you can see the amount of penetration from the side, or put the welded pieces in a vise and see how much force it takes to knock them apart. Seeing the depth of penetration provides an absolute measure, while testing the strength of the weld with a BFH provides a relative one, but both are informative.

I hope you enjoy doing it. I sure did.

Years ago when I applied for a welding job they did a test. You were to weld a piece of what they called slick rod to a piece of angle iron. They would then take a pipe wrench and try to break the weld. My first try they did break the weld the 2nd try they ripped the angle iron. I was hired on the spot. Funny thing is I had NEVER mig welded before but had stick and tig welded

that is a nice table. If only I had a shop to put it in I'd e jealous.LOL
from the sounds of posts below I must be doing something wrong, I have burnt up 4 of the welders in pictures below and talked about that people say they have had for years. I have bought every welder on auction I can afford and have yet to have one last more than a year. even bought 2 new ones already and let the smoke out of them in 15 months.

Most welders have a cooling fan in them.
Perhaps you have low voltage and the fan does not run fast enough to move enough air to cool your welders.
I had a friend that the fan motor quit in his welder. Rather than try to fix the fan, he figured that he would just not do any heavy welding. On day he forgot and burned out that nice welder.

Dave when you get a chance can you measure how tall that table is from the ground up?

I have a 3x 10 table with a vice but I find it’s a bit too tall for some things. But it’s my main work bench.

I also have a top from a welding table I cut in half for a guy and he gave me the other side for doing the job. It’s 2.5’x4’ and 1/2” top. I just need to put legs on it and maybe wheels. I’m thinking I’d like to keep this one a bit shorter.

Never enough tables and never enough space.
Thanks, Grant.

I ran back to the shed today. It is exactly 36" tall with casters. Kind of a nice height for me for a lot of projects.
