Cordless Drill Chuck

Does anyone out there know of a cordless drill that came with a real honest a goodness good chuck ? I've got several drills and the chucks won't hold a smooth shank drill bit tight past about half a hole. I've got Bostitch , Craftsman, and Dewalt 1/2" drills and none of them will hold on to a bit to save their lives. My next move is a keyed chuck. Any idears ?

Dealt has a 1/2" hammer drill with a metal chuck that holds good.

I am with you on plastic chucks. I have not found one yet that will grip a smooth shank bit. I just look at them as nothing more than a screw driver.

I look at cordless drills as an expendable tool. So I don't care if they're pretty.
I use a pair of channel locks to grab the chuck to tighten/loosen a bit.
Works for me.

I have a couple of 12 volt 3/8" DeWalt that the chucks hold well.
A couple years I bought a 3/8" 20 volt. That one the chuck does not hold as well.

I do like my Makita, the drill locks it self when I twist the chuck. It tightens very well,(as long as
my hands hold up)

Dewalt has the cheap line at home depot and the prograde from someplace like grainger or msc. The prograde have metal chucks. Never had a problem with holding in a production environment.

I have an older Makita drill. Batteries crapped out nearly a decade ago. That drill has probably the best keyless chuck I've yet seen. Planning to get new aftermarket batteries for them soon. Can't believe how cheap the prices are, and can upgrade to NiMH in the process and still use the original charger.

Try roughing up the inside of the jaws with a Dremel and fine stone . I did this to a Mityoto precision drill made to take 1/16th"and finer bits at high speed , it's never slipped since .
Or just roughen up the shanks of your drills , once they slip it polishes them so smooth that it's no wonder they slip.

A good chuck isn't cheap. they cost as much as a lot of complete drills, that's why you don't get a good one until you get into a really good or high end drill. Price chucks in McMaster or MSC for an education.

Bingo! If you have a round file, like a chainsaw file, stick it in the chuck and tighten the chuck up as much as you can, do it several times. The file should be harder than the jaws and leave an imprint. Or wrap some 80 grit paper around the file and rough up the jaws. Then rinse the interior of the chuck out with a good solvent. The OUTSIDE of the jaws need some lube, not the inside of the jaws.

And as someone else said, Channel Locks help old guys with arthritic hands tighten keyless chucks rather well.

I been to 2 county fairs and a heifer breeding, but I ain't never seen anything like that.. chainsaw file
trick.. I'm gonna try it tomorrow.. Thanks

I keep channel locks in the kitchen to open up powerade and gatorade bottles. They put those on T I T tite.

Hope it works for you. Some chucks have real hard jaws, but not file hard.

FWIW, I got a nice small set of Cleveland drills a couple years back. Every one of them has a 3 sided flat on the shaft. Very, very nice for cordless drills. They were on sale at Lowes under the "Cle-Line" name. Haven't seen them since, but they are real good drills.

acobs, Rohm, and Albrecht all make good keyless chucks that work well. But they don't come on a homeowner quality drill motor. You have to buy the chuck separately and put it on your drill. On the plus side, one good Albrecht will last the rest of your life and your kid's lives, so you can take it off one drill and put it on the next.
