Yup. I use a small stainless ruler pinched gently between the tip[ of the tool and the work piece. If it is vertical, the tool is on the senterline. Jim

The centerline of the turning work in a lathe is clearly defined as the axis of the headstock bearings and thus the chuck. A tool bit is created, or purchased to cut into that cylinder as it spins. The Z axis is away from the chuck face toward the tail stock. The X axis is away from the centerline negative Z and negative X are toward the chuck, and toward the centerline. A simple lathe as is being discussed has no Y axis. But the cutting action depends very much on the height of the tool in relation to the centerline. If too high, (any above the centerline is almost always too high), or too low (even .020 might be too low) the cutting action will be horrible, on just make smoke. Some materials like bronze and copper like a little negative rake to the tool cutting tip and flank. Steel and aluminum like near zero rake. Tools for 90% of lathe work need a rounded tip. All Carbide and ceramic inserts I hav seen or are in our supply cabinets are rounded .010 radius or close to it. This illustration exaggerates in both directions, but is correct. the next shows a right hand tool (turns moving left) Jim

Interesting. Guess I would need to see a picture of how it is used on something such as a shaft being turned to understand how it works. Thanks.

(quoted from post at 00:17:31 01/17/21) I replied to the wrong post. For a guy trying to learn lathes, [b:d94523548a]could you guys explain a little mote[/b:d94523548a].

A little mote is a speck of dust commonly seen floating in the air in a beam of sunlight.
