Fluids for an 851

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and need some advice. I recently purchased a 1959 Ford Powermaster 851 and would like to do a full service to it. What weights and types would be the best to use for the engine, power steering, trans and hydro. Also this unit has a front loader but I haven't had any luck finding a model. It has an external filter which I'm going to change but was wondering if I should change the fluid as well and if so what should I use. I'm gonna attach a picture to help anyone who maybe able to identify the loader. Thanks for any input.

I have an 841S and I run O'Reilly's brand 20W-50 in the engine. UTF in the transmission and hyds and rear end. As per the original owners manual you should use type F transmission fluid but I use the newer Dextra universal fluid. UTF should meet the Ford 134D spec.

Rockhauler, the best oil for the hydraulics depends on where you are and how you will use it. The issue is that additives in modern high performance oils will absorb moisture from humid air which is drawn into the cases as the tractor cools after use. There are frequent posts here from old tractor owners who, upon checking their oil, find that it is what they describe as a coffee milkshake. This is because they don't use their tractor frequently enough for long enough for it to heat the oil up enough to drive the moisture out of the oil. If you are in an area that doesn't get humid, or you will use the tractor hard enough to get the oil hot once a month, UTF will work OK. All tractors that have clutch packs, whether for the transmission, or PTO, or have wet brakes need UTF. Your 851 has none of these so it will do just fine with just plain hydraulic oil. Oil with water mixed in will not give you the lubrication that you need, and when you use plain hydraulic oil the moisture will stay separate under the oil where you can drain it off by cracking the drain plugs.

Thank you for the info. I live in VA
which is fairly humid and I will only be
using it for short periods mostly so I
will just use standard hydro oil.

Do you recommend standard hydro oil for
the loader also?

Yes Rockhauler, The loader, like the tractor has no clutch packs, and is open to the atmosphere, and you will be able to drain the water off the bottom periodically. I have hauled a lot of rock here in NH, and have been to VA a lot of times. Where in VA are you?

Yes UTF that meets the Ford 134D spec for the trans/hyd ad ATF for the power steering which by the way is right out of the owners manual that I have for the 801/601 series fords

Can you show me where the owners manual calls for m2c134d fluid for a ford 851 tractor??

Yes you can use m2c53, m2c53a, m2c134, 134a, 134b, 134c, 134d, or even the later e, f and 134g fluids, all of which where not invented for many years after the 851. You will be hard pressed to find UTF that does not meet the specs for an 851. Tractors made after 1975 started requiring a more robust UTF. Tractors made after 1985 [b:98ae125a7d]required[/b:98ae125a7d] the 134c/d fluids.

Just as one can use Mobil1 full synthetic oils in the engine, but no way the owners manual called for those fluids.

I did not say the owners manual called for UTF.

I did how ever say the owner manual calls for ATF Type F but now days Dextron is just find since it is universal

So where did you come up with what your saying or didn't you read things right?

Hello Old. Just wondering why you are using 20w50 instead of 15w40? Is it burning oil or does it work better? I know it would make for harder starting. I had an old oil burning Chevy back in the day and put 50w in it. Got about 30 miles to the quart till I finally overhauled it. I fogged for mosquitos everywhere I went.

""""""""Yes UTF that meets the Ford 134D spec for the trans/hyd ad ATF for the power steering which by the way is right out of the owners manual that I have for the 801/601 series fords"""""""

Old,, did I misquote your post above??? If I did, sorry. Must be a web page problem. 134d was NEVER in the 801/601 manual as far I my manual shows. You must have a different one?

And why 134 D.. why not 134E or F or G?? Or even mercon...

Your correct UTF was not in the op manual

Hyds called for S.A.E. 20 or 30 above 32.

Trans/rear end Ford Hyd oil

The part I said was as per the manual was the Type F ATF which can now be Dextron 3 or 4

But now days UTF that meets the Ford 134D spec can be used but yes back in the 50s UTF wasn't even a thought.

By the way this is right out of the 601/801 manual I have in my lap

I use the 20W-50 in most every thing I own due to the fact here in MO. where I live it doesn't get all that cold in the winter but it can get up to and around 100 in the summer. I do use Rotella 15W-40 in my IH584 but it is a diesel and I use Valvoline 60W in my 1935 JD B but if it has ever been rebuilt it would have been back in the 40 or 50s

Forgot Ford spec # out of the manual M-4864-A that is on page 14 of the manual.
Oh and I take it back it is ATF type A not F as per page 40

Ok so upon further investigation. The power steering kit that was installed on my tractor uses the fluid from the loader. I'm assuming UTF should be fine. Now this power steering setup doesn't have a shaft that goes into the gearbox so do I need to worry about the lubrication of the 2 fan gears inside the gearbox since they don't really do anything.

What type of grease does it take and how do I check it? The manual doesn't really give clear details or I'm just missing them.

The Op manual doesn't really say so I would say just normal grease. I'd have to look but if I remember right there is a pipe plug on the steering box

Does anyone know the correct fuel cap for this tractor. I bought one from Amazon that claimed it was for my series but it doesn't tighten up. Here's a picture of what I bought.
