Pittsburgh 63726 diesel compression gage

Recently bought this set at harbor freight.
1st time I try to use it it doesn't seem to work right. On each compression stroke the pressure builds and drops off immediately. Thought it might have been the engine but it definitely is building pressure.

I went to remove the pressure relief valve but it twisted right off due to being very thin metal and loctited in place.

Is there supposed to be a check valve? I definitely don't have one on this set.

Take it back and try another,if the second one doesn't work, take it back for a refund.

It was the only one they had and they were discontinuing it

yes it needs a check valve, like a tire valve stem has. once you give it 5 puffs then take the reading and release the pressure.

Thank you, I thought it needed one.I can't see how this is supposed to work without one
