Li-on charging

Son got me a Dewalt 1/2" cordless imapct, the 20V Li-on job. Came in the mail yesterday. Looked through the manual and it says not try charging below 45F. Made me recall other sons 20v Li-on charger gives a "cold/hot" error code quite often. So am I correct in thinking I should move those chargers indoors? Book even says it will damage them if they aren't warm enough. The bigger question I have is WHY these types need room temp to charge right?

Bret4207,

My guess is that they wouldn't overcharge? Smart chargers will further them at the same
voltage regardless of temp. I think if you charge the.

A fully charged battery a 80 degrees will not have the same voltage at 40 degrees
although fully charged,

Guido.

Trying to charge when the battery is near freezing temps will damage it. Something to do about the chemistry of a li-ion cell.

My Makita charger reads a temp sensor built into the battery and will not charge if too hot or too cold and will only slow charge if near the high or low temp thresholds.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to find or build an enclosed cabinet I can stick a low temp thermostat in with a 100 watt light bulb for heat. Set it to 50F or so and it should keep things happy. Currently have the new batt and charger inside the house, but that's a pain when you need it in the shop.

n old refrigerator with a line-voltage thermostat and the light switch disabled would work well for that.

I use just that out in the old milkroom, but there's no room in the shop. Old fridges and freezers make great storage cabinets for smaller tools prone to rust. Just no more room left in the shop!
