Cogged belt update

I fitted a replacement pto to deck drive belt to my John Deere X340 mower . The original was toothed or cogged on the upper and lower faces , these belts don't seem to last very long and are almost $100 Aus . The replacement I used was a Kevlar wrapped plain V belt , it fitted well and easily and was less than half the price of the JD part . Two hours of use saw no slipping or untoward noises . So , so far so good , a few hours more might prove it to be the right decision .

My old Gleaner F would chew up a drive belt every year, or less. The darn Agco cog belt.

Found a replacement Gates belt no cogs, it would last a couple or three years.

These were pretty big Vee belts.

Everyone says how much better the cogs are, but not in my experience. Cogs peel off.

What I understand the purpose of cogged belts is to wrap around small pulleys.

Mowers usually don't have small pulleys, so not any advantage.

i agree. and they dont have to pull so hard, such as on engine water pumps , as on a machine they can pull hard. and it was to eliminate the belt cracking.

I had one of those as a drive belt on a gt235 lawn tractor. They told me the cogs on the outside were for heat distribution/cooling. Don’t run that Side over an idler
pulley, such as on the mower deck pulleys. This was the PTO belt
