Our figs over here in SETX and SWLA have long been over with. Like mid June maybe. I've seen pics of your tree and it is really healthy. You might think about trimming some of the brush on the backside of it so its shape stays round and not flat. Wingnut.

Hello Larry,

I picked these @5:30 today. It rained @ 6 P. M. For 15 minutes. Lots of them would have cracked with the rain,

Hello wingnuttx,

It will get a good trimming come call. Some branches are now 9 feet tall,

Guido.

Couldn't get them to grow in WNC but my Dad was a nut about figs. He'd get a bag full every year and make preserves. Usually lasted almost til the next season.

Educate me on figs, I aways thought of them as a Mediterranean fruit? What do you make with them?

Hello 4520,

Let me start by saying I am no expert on the fig tree. I did have one in my yard when I was in Italy, so I am an expert on eating them.

They are grown in the Mediterranean, but here in the states there are many varieties. Some like mine is hardy, and no need to to be covered for the winter. I have seen single digit temps here, and it only freezes from the top of the branch a foot or two, depends on the size of the branch.

They are not the same plants that are grown in the Mediterranean, as they are grown for cold climates.
I only eat them fresh or dried. Fresh figs can also be lightly heated on the BBQ.

Now that I have so many I may try a few. You can make jam with the fruits, as it is a sweet. Richard G may do that, as he said there is a fig tree on his son's property?

Guido.

Hello BAnNC,

If you go to Home depot or Lowes, bet you can find some fig tree that is cultivated for your area. That is where I bought mine, then used small branches with roots to propagate the plant.

I know that they grow in Canada, of course they need to be sheltered for the winter, and the growing season is much shorter then your area.

My growing zone is 6 or 7? You can simply do a search then you will know,

Guido.

Guido is correct.
Fig preserves are really good.
Just takes a little work and time.
The recipe is in any good canning and preserving book.
Richard

Thanks for the info, forgot you grew up in Italy. I remember the pics you posted of your town, they were neat.

Hello 4520bw,

Yep, I was 17 years old when I came across the pond. My town is 1000 years old, many parts are the original wall, and not a crack on any of them, even after WW2,

Guido.

You really should share your life story! I know alot of people on here would to. I have a great uncle buried in the American cemetery in Florence.

Hello 4520bw,

May be It should told, as there are many things that happened during war times, that are not in the history books. All related to me by my parents, one grandma on my mother side, and many of the town's elders with their accounts of the war, as they lived through it.

You are not the first one to have suggested I do so. I am not a writer, but may be I can ask one of my smart grandkids to lend a literary hand.

They would them be able to keep and share with the future generations. The more I reflect on the possibility of writing my town's war time history through my limited experience, the more I like the idea.

Thanks for showing interest, I don't know how or when, but I think it should be told,

Guido.

That would be a nice piece of history for your family, once your gone it will be forgotten otherwise. You can always try a practice run on here!
