pullin' posts

My son brought home a neat toy he ordered from an outfit in Oklahoma City for pulling fence posts. It has a Hi-lift jack attached to an over-size dolly, and it seems to work well for the job. He pulled twenty chain-link fenceposts out of heavy clay in a couple of hours. I would have given twice the price for one of these fifty years ago, and my back would be in better shape than it is, too.

We here in Siberia have been using a steel wheel to do that by simply placing the wheel against the post, put a log chain over the top of the wheel, attach it to the base of the post and pull with a tractor or horse for that matter. The pull of the chain on the post will be straight up at first. Enough to get the post out of the ground. Doesn't cost a thing if you have an old wheel around.

I have a 8 N tractor . I use the drawbar - back up to it . Wrap a chain around the post and on to drawbar . Will pick up 1800 lbs

ou have an exceptionally strong 8N! The Hundred series tractors were only rated at 1250 pounds lift capacity.

I remember cautions against doing that with a tractor.

Guys would back a rear tractor wheel up to the post and put a chain over the top of the wheel. The fear was that if the post was too heavy or stuck in the ground, the tractor could flip over backwards.

Yes, and there are hazards to trying to do it with a hi-lift Jack, too. I've pulled posts with all kinds of machinery. My point with this thread was that somebody invented a device that incorporated a Hi-lift jack that makes it safer to use. I don't have a front-end loader any more since I sold both my tractors several years ago. The FEL was the best thing I had ever found for pulling posts.

I remember helping my father; and I have used the same trick: take a second post, length approximately the height of the post to be pulled fasten the chain to the bottom of the post to be pulled, over the second post set on the ground at a slight angle, hook to the tractor or horse and pull away. Just like a lift the post in the ground comes out. I remember pulling a post that I had to use this method on all 4 sides of the post. When it finally came out the person who installed the post years before had used a part of a tree with the larger part in the ground with: not only a bend but also a hook as tough it had been a cut off branch from the tree; so no wonder I had to pull from 4 different sides before the post came out. It was well hooked into the ground.

I wasn't suggesting using the tractor wheel. We used a separate wheel like an old steel wagon wheel. Overall about the same height as tractor drawbar.

wondering.....was that 1250 lbs 3 feet out from the lift eyes?? meaning you could pick up a 1250 lb disc harrow as long as it did not extend 6 feet total length from the eyes/pins....

bsolutely NOT. Directly over the drawbar installed in the lift arm sockets.

My NAA only has an 800# lift. Have to rock the post with drawbar to pull clean. The 4000 has a 3500# lift and jerks them out clean using a boom pole backed up tight to the base.
