I have a Coleman Powermate 5500 gen with a Yamaha mz300 engine, I would like to add another muffler
to reduce the noise.

Good/Bad idea? What type muffler MC/ATV/other?

Used for camping and power outages.

added a large muffler to my single cylinder air cooled welder engine and it did quiet the exhaust a bit, but I found that much if not most of the noise was from mechanical aspects of the engine other than exhaust. Don't expect much.

Four 4X8 sheet of plywood in a box around the genset . Glue open cell foam to the inside of the plywood to absorb the clatter.

As others have suggested, you'll get more sound deadening by putting some walls around the generator. I have a Honda EU6500i which is one of the quietest generators available, yet when I open the side covers it is nearly as loud as other generators.

50% of the noise can come from the cooling fins, and vibration transfer to floors and walls. Using vibration dampening isolators under the unit, and vented/baffled walls make dramatic improvements. Fan driven air into the box, and exhaust removal are needed to prevent overheating, but bugger better mufflers will likely disappoint. Jim

If you want a truly quiet generator, you need to get one that is designed to be quiet. You might be able to knock off 2 or 3 decibels with a better muffler, but that Powermate generator was never intended to be very quiet. The first criteria is to get an inverter-type generator. Then look at the db ratings and get something less than 60 db.

THERE ARE some good videos on you tube showign methods to quite a noisy generator> sure a better muffler may help< just be sure to not over restrict the exhaust gas flow and damage an exhaust valve

Mine has a round muffler on it, I just found a muffler at the junkyard one day and stuck it over the round muffler. We must have used that thing hundreds of hours without any issues.
