My digital caliper always wants to convert to MM,i want it in IN, i get it set measure what i want it's already on the metric system or at 0.00, then i have to close it to get a backwards reading, it's about 8 years old! HELP!

Ok JF,that's maybe it. so what do i clean the battery with, maybe a little starting fluid on a rag ? Thanks

I can't speak for your situation but in mine the contacts in the caliper were corroded. I had to scrape them off and apply some dielectric silicon.

All mine stay where they where set last. Try a new battery and clean the contacts or buy a new one. I bought one that reads in inches and fractions as I thought that would be pretty handy. Turns out the lowest fraction is 1/128 and usually that's the fraction it shows. So instead of converting decimals to inches, which I have become pretty good at over the years. I find myself trying to convert something like 57/128 to something more usable (7/16).

Mine don't do that and i never have to buy a battery , they also work day and night so no sun light is required . Lot to be said about OLD SCHOOL and a Dial caliper .

If this is something new it's started, try replacing the battery, clean everything up.

If you can't trust them, time for a new set.

There are a lot of cheap Chinese ones out there, it's a crap shoot if they are any good.

If you use them regularly, and need reliability, step up to a name brand.

I prefer digital over dial because of the harsh environment I use them in, coolant and chips.

But if you can keep them clean, dial indicators will work. But with dial, they need to be quality. Cheap ones are unreliable, troublesome, and fragile.

I have one from HF. Works fine, except it has no on/off switch. It turns off when you close the calipers and gauge reads zero. Problem is, if it jiggles just a zillionth of an inch so the calipers are no longer closed, the display comes on again and runs the battery down. So I just remove the battery after using it.

I like the 6" EZCal caliper from iGaging (digital).

I run 3d printers so needed a caliper that could do metric, but also wanted standard inch readings for other things..

the one I have does metric, decimal inch, and fractional inch and will remember the last setting it was on and has a nice large display screen. It has an on/off switch, so no unnecessary battery drain, and uses a very common 2032 disc battery

I did a bunch of research before buying and this particular unit was highly recommended as a very good "budget" caliper with very good accuracy - comparable to some high end calipers.

My computer does that if I put it in a bag with wireless mouse turned on, took me a while to figure that one out.

Jeff, i sprayed a new paper towel in one corner, with starting fluid, wiped off the battery, works like it suppose to! Thank you, i would of never thought, to do that !

As a retired machinist , I have owned and used
many different calipers , I have B & S dial type,
Starrett digital , Fowler digital , and Starrett
50 division calipers , my favorite in harsh
environment is the 50 division vernier
calipers from Starrett they come in 6 inch , 12,
24 inch , keep them oiled , and will last 3 lifetimes
