Trailer hitch

Want to make a hitch to move our gooseneck trailer with the tractor. We have quick hitches. Anyone make one and have suggestions. My thought was to weld a ball on the top of the quick hitch to one side of the third linkk. ???? We have went from needing rain to over 15" the last three days. South Central IL.

I think I would fabricate something that actually utilizes the quick hitch. Welding the ball is probably not a good idea.

I was in a hurry to make a gooseneck hitch for the tractor and made a temporary one, mounting a ball on top of a three point bale spear. That was 35 years ago, so I guess it can no longer be considered temporary.

I'm sure that you are aware that you will be pulling from above the tractor axle. It's been argued on here before that the gooseneck jack will hit the ground and stop the tractor from rearing the front end. I like to try to think about who will use it in the future, and will they be tempted to use that ball as a convenient spot to hook a pull chain. Another thing to be aware of - going downhill and turning with a load on the trailer could become unpleasant because you are "high hitched".

A nearby RV dealer uses something similar to what you describe to move fifth wheel trailers.

If you google "three point gooseneck hitch", you can find a number of off-the-shelf products for around 200 bucks, such as this one from King Kutter that also has a 2 inch receiver.

I have one I made based on a typical trailer mover you can find online. With my 4 cylinder Ford 4000 the gooseneck is limited. The trailers tend to be just to tongue heavy. If you can use it on a loader equipped tractor its much better. Mine works great for bumper pull trailers, pulling post, and dragging things. I put clevis hooks on it for easily attaching a chain.

I welded a hitch receiver tube to our quick hitch, just under the center hook. We don't use it as a hitch any more, since most of our small, three point equipment varies in size too much to make it "quick" to use. It replaces the bungee on the three point arms of our loader tractor. I can install any hitch insert I have, you could use a 6 inch rise hitch with ball and pick the gooseneck right up. Mine often picks up the dump trailer to fill with the loader to make hauling dirt more efficient.

I made one out of a quick hitch with bad latches. If I had it to do over, I would have mounted the ball farther back. It works good with the hitch on my flatbed, but with the livestock trailer, I can't turn very short, the sides of the hitch hit the top link brackets. Live and learn.

Another possibility that I thought of too when I was making mine, can you take some large angle iron and make an A frame that will sit right down in a quick hitch if you don't have a bad one that you want to sacrifice?

I have a quick hitch that fits several of my implements. I built an attachment that fits the quick hitch that has a bolt on ball, to interchange 2" or 2 5/16", with a receiver hitch welded on the bottom. quick on quick off and I use it a lot. I really like the quick hitch. Bud
