Hydraulic brakes on trailer

I have a chance to get a dump trailer that made out of a rear end and frame off a 1 ton truck with dump body. Is there any way to chance over to some type of electric brake system ? Thanks

Your most likely cheapest system would be to use a surge brake hitch coupler with a 1-5/16" ball socket. Likely it will be rated for 10,000 or more lbs. There is an electric brake hydraulic pump unit available, but I believe it requires a battery on the trailer, and it is much more expensive than the surge brake coupler. Generally the surge brake couplers are quite reliable and low maintenance.

You can, but would have to change out the axles.

Surge brakes would be easier if the existing hydraulic brakes are all there and repairable.

The down side to surge brakes you have to lock them out to back up, and like any hydraulic brake system, they don't like being stored for long periods.

I once changed hydraulic brakes to electric brakes by putting a disk inside the drum and putting in electric brake components in place of the hydraulic pieces. It worked and didn't cost much. I bought the arm,
magnet, and maybe some pivot pieces. I don't remember all of what was done because this was over thirty years ago. I do remember choosing components which were for electric brakes close to the size of the
hydraulic brakes. A little machining was required for the disk the magnet rides against. I have always wondered if that disk is some certain metal and if the disk for disk brakes would be a good choice to
adapt into the system.

Thank you for making that correction. I must have been brain dead the moment I wrote that. I always proof read my posts, but I sure goofed that one up.

Actuator

+1 on an Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator.

Most likely cheaper way to go than converting to all electric.

If you go the Actuator route. Get one made for a braking system and not for a trailer jack. For they will not react fast enough to supply quick braking or releasing once applied.

I have a friend who raises beef cattle. He had a livestock trailer that had electric brakes that because of the messy barnyards it was often in, the brakes often gave problems.
He bought a new livestock trailer that had electric over hydraulic brakes, no more problems.
This is a system that has an electrical operated hydraulic pump that operates the hydraulic brakes.
