New Microsoft Edge

They dumped that new Edge in to my computer a couple of weeks ago. I can't get a video to play worth a darned since. Anybody else
having trouble with it? I watch Ag Day or Tennessee Crossroads while I'm on the elliptical every morning and they play a few
seconds, then that little spinner in the middle of the screen whirls for a few seconds, then it plays a few seconds, and over and
over and over. I've been having to use the Google Chromebook instead and it plays on that alright.

For the first week, I wasn't able to download pictures off the Cannon camera either, but that has rectified itself.

I resisted moving from IE as long as I could but eventually changed to Edge out of necessity.

After a quite brief transition period, I have no issues and actually like it better than IE, at least IE in the past several years.

Is your computer up to date?

Dean

I choose not to use it. It is on this computer, but I use Chrome, or Firefox to function. If the install of Edge caused the issue no matter what browser you use, then it was a failed install, or is incompatible with your device. Downloading Chrome is pretty straight forward. Good luck, and I hope others have solutions. Uninstalling it might be the only option, but because it is a MS product, it should be solid, but it is not. Jim

Edge was OK when I started using a new computer a couple months ago. One problem was it started using way too much data. When I switched to Chrome and shut off Edge data usage slowed down considerably. I allowed Microsoft during setup to have access to my Gmail account. A few weeks later I kept getting a notice it was out of date. So I went to update it. To update it I had to allow Microsoft access to all my emails and all my contacts list including the contact's phone numbers. So tough luck Microsoft, I did NOT agree and disabled their access!

hate my computer. It's only a couple years old, and windows 10. (I liked 7) It chooses the most inconvenient times to tell me that it is tired and needs to reset itself or something. From that point it might be ten minutes or ten hours before it is ready to carry on.
I got that edge thing too. Used it, hated it, and went back to Firefox. If I thought a new computer would help my situation, I'd buy one, but my suspicion is that it knows my age and just likes to mess with me.

Edge was dumped onto my computer somehow a month or so ago. I couldn't get it to work right.

I'm still hanging on with IE, but I use Chrome for one or two things. Problem with Chrome is it eats data like crazy. I guess they don't realize that not everyone has unlimited bandwidth.

When I got my new laptop for home, it came with Windows 10 and Edge.

I could not navigate YT with Edge, it would time out too quick.

I installed Firefox and got rid of the time out.

Edge might work now, since the YT upgrade, but Firefox works, so I'm leaving well enough alone.

I didn't uninstall Edge, just don't use it. I don't think it slows anything down as long as it's not running.

Came with our last new Dell. Another reason why I prefer Mac. I spent hours researching and going through elusive menus to shut off "features " that was sending my Data to Microcrap and loading down our slow rural internet connection. Doubt if it is possible to find all the snoop ware and actually shut it off.

Yeah, this little stunt that MS pulled with Edge ticked me off also. I had previously uninstalled it before. After this last fiasco...er....update, I think it "CAN" be done, but they sure are trying to make it impossible to use their software without being able to choose to use other software.

HP pulled a similar stunt a few years back with their printer software, not allowing their printers to use generic ink. They got sued (class action) and HP lost.

I have 2 PC's with Windows 10 and access to ONLY cellular internet. I get 15GB per month of 4G speed, which for this remote area is about as fast as 3G is in an urban area. After 15GB, Verizon slows us down to 3G speeds, which they "say" we may not even notice. Oh?? I might as well shut down for the rest of the month. Even 4G lately has been so bad I can't look things up.

ANYwayyyyyy, I disabled Edge on this PC and then I disabled updates. At some point (I read this, so it MUST be true!), MS has said that for those of us who have disabled updates, that there will be FORCED updates, whether we want them or not. I'll try to find the links again and post them, but it's looking like another lawsuit is forming, this time against MS. Funny though, I have a feeling MS will win this one.

I don't think it is just the Edge update but the system update to OS 2004. I had lots of problems after the first update of 2004 with the circle spinning and problems starting and shutting down. There are several updates that will fix that problem. Go to Settings and choose Updates. After about 3 more updates everything works great now including Edge. The new Edge is using the same open source software as Chrome.

Well, yes and no. Both Edge and Chrome are built from the open-sourced Chromium software, but they are now vastly different than the basic Chromium. Edge is also no longer open-source. They have allowed you to dabble a bit, but seems they have specifically limited just how much 'play' we simple users can have with said "open-sourced" software.

I mostly use Brave these days (also Chromium-based), but sometimes use Firefox.

The MS "update" to version 2004 messed things up on one of my systems, as well. The new "update" seems to have fixed things somewhat. I do not use Windoze, except for things for which there is no open source (Linux) replacement. A lot of program vendors don't configure their things for Linux. Fortunately, these are becoming fewer, and more things run on Linux. I use Linux for all day-to-day activities, as well as Firefox for a browser and Thunderbird for e-mail. Libre Office for word processing (direct MS Office replacement), and other direct replacement programs for video, PDF's, etc. Never an issue, and complete program updates take minutes, instead of hours, and never have to reboot, unless updating the kernel. Just continue working as normal. And, with Linux, there is no registration, no spyware, no virus issues; you don't have to "ask permission" to install or de-install anything. zuhnc

Randy, what software are you using to play videos? I use VLC Media Player. Haven't been a fan of Windows Media Player in many years.

In your post you mention that your video keeps stopping and re-buffering. It seems that the good folks at Microsoft wanted Edge to reset lots of settings on our computers so we would be forced to at least take a look at the new Edge (if for no other reason than trying to get our settings back in order). On your current media player, is there a way to set your picture quality? You may have been streaming at 720p or 1080p, but now they may have reset so that your player is trying to stream 3D or whatever the highest resolution is these days.

I stream in 240p, and have to limit my stream time even then.

Please let us know what you come up with.

I don't know what it's running videos on. Windows Media Player I suppose. I just go to the Ag Day or Tn Crossroads website, click
play and it does. I don't think it tells me what it's playing it on. It just dawned on me, I do have Chrome on this computer. Any
time the kids are here and want to do anything online with my computer, they click on it and use it. It just never crosses my mind
to use it. I'll try it tomorrow morning and see if it makes a difference. I'll say one thing, YT is faster on the new Edge anyway.

My guess is you're streaming through your browser.

There should be a setting (probably lower right corner) of the screen while streaming that allows you to choose your preferred video quality. Am also guessing that it's streaming at the highest resolution. Just lower the setting a bit and try that. It "[i:0796da9172]should[/i:0796da9172]" remember your new setting.

I'd try it on my PC and show some screenshots, but Edge isn't allowed to come out and play with the other apps at the moment. ;-)

They dumped on me too and my easy share camera didn't work. Hopefully it will straighten out soon. Also took some favorites out too. Ron MN

Ya, the miserable thing, when you click on the bar to change web sites, it doesn't drop down with the list of most used sites anymore. You have to start typing it in for the one that you're going to to come up.

No dice. Been 5 days now and still won't play a video without freezing up. I tried using Chrome and it doesn't make any difference. They'll play right through on the Acer Chrome book.
