What is something worth

I was at the cure the worlds problems meeting this morning. One of the new guys ask. What is a tractor really worth. I told him for me it would be.
The shape it was in.
Does it run good.
Does everything work.
Any major leaks.

I am sure you guys can add more. I am not a tractor guy.

Tractor by itself is a one person conveyance and not very cost effective. You have to add implements or attachments like a loader, blade, or plow to make it useful. What it is going to be used for is most important determiner of worth.

Just because a person(s) have more money than you do and can put something to better use than you can doesn't make them brainless idiots, really it makes them smarter.

Yes & no. If something can be put to use, yes. If it's just going to rot away in someones shed for collectability, no. Steam traction engines come to mind for the latter. For the most part, they seem to be rich boys toys &/or show ponies. Should I get one, it would see some revenue generating work.... and yes, I do have an understanding of certifications, maintenance & upkeep, lack of parts availability, etc. Also have operating & firing experience, albeit with locomotives & stationary boilers.

Practical value of something has very little input on what selling value is with a lot of things, take jewelry, antiques of about any sort, endless list. What is big money to one person is pocket change to another so the 'value' is set by desirability at the time and ability to pay,of course things go in and out of style so values change.

Unfortunate but true. Anything else I would have to say after that would just be a rant about greed & the human creature becoming pointless. So I shall save it for another day (maybe a different website altogether) & get back to work.

Pricing beyond the value price point is a bit nuts unless there is family "treasure" involved, or insider info on things right with it. But if sold, the seller can make out well. How many times have you said " I won't take $10.00 for that 60# small square? Jim

Nothing has value unless someone wants it.

It all depends oh now bad someone wants a tractor and what they're willing to pay for it.

Reminds me of the time my cousin told me he had a thousand dollar dog. Said he traded two five hundred dollar cats for it.

For me it starts with "is it something I want". I have people all the time say there is a certain tractor for sale along side the road and its usually a model I already have so the answer is I don't want it and thus it isn't worth anything to me. If I want it then the question is do I have the ability to fix what is wrong with it. I'm not too worried about the cost to fix up unless its way over the top. Finally I look at the cost its selling for. I will pay more than a lot of people if I really want it but I have my limits. I bought a real basket case Super C last fall and spend $500 on tractor probably worth about $200 . It needed almost anything you could point your finger at as it had sat for a very long time outside but it was a tractor I could save, a model I wanted and thus a tractor I bought, even if people think I over paid for it.

Couple of the major things not mentioned is brand and color, some will pay huge money for a brand name and some people wouldn't give anything for a perfectly fine usable tractor painted the 'wrong' color, but will want to drive a certain color vehicle no matter the brand name.

Do get me wrong, I have no issues with people asking on here but for me the mystery is this. If a person has enough internet knowledge to search and find this site to ask the question why don't they just search make+model+for sale??
With current values on commonly found tractors my pat answer for inquiries is "don't make any plans for the large fortune your going to recieve for it!" LOL

I have found if you want to know about something. Go to the ones that use them. Ask them what they think. You will get a much better answer.People like me that do not know. Need a place to ask questions. I know generators. I don't know tractors. So sites like this are very helpful.

The value of an old tractor has little to do with how it will be used. It depends on how badly someone needs it in order to have it perhaps only to look at. The value is not determined by what two people agree on. This is only the price, and can get badly skewed and someone gets a killer deal and someone loses out. True values are arrived at statistically just as in the housing market or used car sales simply by the reporting and tabulating of many sales. This information is available in a Fastline book. It has so many tractors listed that it takes multiple volumes to hold it.

That gets to what I was thinking. The value depends on who owns it. If I want to buy it from somebody, it's worth a fortune, if I'm trying to sell it, it's worthless. LOL

Do I have a use for it?

No.

Do I have a place to store it?

No.

Do I have any equipment big enough for it?

No.

Can I afford it?

No.

Will the wife be happy with me if I buy it?

No.

Am I going to buy it?

Yes.

Your not alone, tractors are bad enough for me but old implements are worse. Couple years ago I had 5 two bottom trip lift plows for sale, all scoured and field ready. After several months of no calls I estimated the weight and called the local scrap yard and got a price. Then I advertised them at one half of scrap price. After two weeks with no takers a scrap guy called and asked if I was immune to him buying them,, told him to come get them. Now a days when I get tired of shedding an implement it goes in the junk pile and when the price is up good by implement.

Interesting discussion. It all depends on who owns the tractor. I have three older tractors (brand not important). These are roughly $2000.00 tractors in good shape which mine are with good tires. I have way more in them than what they are worth. I would not sell them for five times what I have in them. I like them and use them. On the other hand my son will get them in the next few years and will probably sell them for $2000.00 or maybe a little more and he will think he got what the tractor(s) are worth. " Hey I got good money for Dad's old tractors." There you have it. Ellis
