Is an accordion a tool?

jerry king accordion repair in cicero illinois or italo american accordion manufacturing in oak lawn illinois.those are the only two i am familiar with. there is castiglione accordion in warren michigan. looks like they have good reviews also.

If you earn your living as a musician, then definitely they are a tool. I play one for fun so it's not a tool but it feels like I'm wearing an anvil. Gets heavier every time I play it !!!!

Depending on the problem a good watch repairmen could fix accordions.

I fixed a 120 bass of mine that needed air valve covers straightened. But I would never try to repair a reed box.

There were a few repair places in Minnesota a few years back but I didn't search them just now as they probably wouldn't be all that useful to you in Michigan.

I'll search and if I find something I'll repost.

Here is some info from Minnesota.

Ron

My neighbor and his son are accordion repair men.
Cincinnati Accordion is their name, but are actually located in Southeast Indiana. I think they have done some fairly extensive repairs and refurbishments. I personally don't play the accordion, but did devote some time to another obscure instrument, the pedal steel guitar.

My late sister gave accordion lessons, so I guess to her it was a tool.

Plus, she had her own polka band, and played her accordion in several other bands. Also, she went around to nursing homes in the area and played her accordion to entertain the residents.

Her funeral was the only funeral where I've heard live accordion music as part of the service.

Hello 55 50 Ron,

I play the accordion too. It came with me from the old country 😂

Here it is,

Guido.

ron, a drum and percussion instructor i had many years ago played in a 2 piece band, he played drums and vocals and his other bandmate played an accordion with a midi interface (musical instrument digital interface) they played jazz, big band , swing, polka, some older country tunes and some early rock. that midi accordion was an orchestra in itself!!, horns, strings, woodwinds, you name it.

Why do you call the pedal steel guitar "obscure"? I own one and play some on it, but I
started too late in life to get really good at it. It's by far my favorite instrument and I
really wish it could be more popular and not be so stereotyped in Country Music. I do like
Country Music but the pedal steel can do so much more.

Here's mine.

I actually have two. The blue and white one is a lady's model - not quite so heavy and slightly narrower keys. I'm not a super player, just play for fun.

Here are mine

Just a friendly poke to you banjo pickers, no offense intended.

Ron, the pedal steel is also my favorite instrument, the only limits to it are the person sitting behind it. It was primarily relegated to country music and now "new" country wants no part of it. A couple of my favorite players with widely varying styles are the late John Hughey and also the late Buddy Cage of The New Riders of the Purple Sage. Hughey was the master of the crying steel and Cage was the master of what I call happy steel.

Did you ever attend any of the International Steel Guitar Conventions in St. Louis that were held on Labor Day weekend?

I did attend the St Louis steel guitar convention once in the 1970s.

I like the styles of Ralph Mooney and Tom Brumley.

Your double neck Mullen looks very nice. I've never tried other brands of guitars, not even to just play them for a test. Mine is an Erickson made by Elvin Erickson of Gonvick, MN. I believe he has passed away. His prices were much lower than the so-called name brands. I use a Peavey Nashville 112 amplifier.

I read in another thread that you took classes with Jeff Newman. I wish that I could have attended one of his week long classes in Tennessee.

I started too late in life on the instrument and honestly my ear is not good enough to be anything more than what I am right now.
The really accomplished masters like those you and I mentioned started young and literally immersed themselves in music and the instrument for their entire lives.

I've got a triple neck Gibson pedal steel. 8 string, with single coil pickups. I hope I live long enough to get good at it. Just to stay on topic, I play a two row button accordion. About the bagpipes, it's a Scots thing. Love em or hate em. I love em. unc
