This old Snap-On transmission jack YA714A about whooped me. I picked it up used about 30 years ago about 20 years ago it stopped working. I had a local hydraulic shop check it out he said he could not get it to work so I set it aside under my shed. When nnalert set in I found time to clean out from under my shed when I came across the jack I set out to take it all the way apart clean it up and re-seal it.

The base was full of rust and Teflon tape from previous attempts to seal the pump circuit’s cap/nuts. Cleaned it up all looked good installed new 0-rings, all the O-rings matched up to off the shelf basic standard O-rings. It worked right off the bat once I got the second stage fully extended I applied a generous amount of hand pressure to the pump peddle as then all of a sudden it puked oil out the top retaining nut for the second stage cylinder. I pulled it apart the O-ring looked good so I tried a harder O-ring I had the same issue now it was cutting the O-ring. At first I thought it used some exotic O-ring I would never find I had the O-ring grove measured it fell into a odd size for the application. I then set out to make a custom O-ring all was good BUT it also cut the one I made.

Then it hit me somehow the second stage cylinder was cutting the O-ring when it maxed out. I took it back apart I found the second stage cylinder is a straight rod that has a larger coupler pined to it with a 5/32” spring pin (roll pin) the pin had seared allowing the holes for the pin to move into and beyond the stop in the retaining nut. The O-ring set deep into the nut I never saw this the pin was dragging hard enough on the coupler the coupler never came off and when you used your hand to retract the cylinder the coupler moved back onto the shaft where it was supposed to be.

Notes in case someone does a search for this jack

I painted it IH 2150 Rouge red : )

Congratulations on a job well done & having the talent & patience to figure it out! Don't you love it when you can fix something that somebody else gave up on?

A trans jack is a really needed tool when handling modern transmissions. Very few are light enough to handle, even with 2 people. Jim

M-man its a done deal, I also about have the shed cleaned out to where I am not ashamed of the mess... One day soon I will get back to the tractor I started on around 2004... I brought it from the original owner...

When nnalert first hit it slowed down for the first couple of weeks the weather was nice so like most I took the time to get out and clean up. Ever since them I have been very busy in the shop it looks like folks did the same as I did and pulled out their old cars and trucks from the weeds to get them back on the road. That slowed down the progress on the jack I about gave up on it. Thanks guys for the nice reply's : )

I had to make tools to get it apart that was the fun part... I was so confused about the top o-ring I made one out of RTV so I could measure it. The grove is a little big for a -217 but that's what it ended up being... I learned when it comes to hydraulic jack repairs to take it slap arse apart to begin with life will be good...

Another tool I made to get the hydraulic plunger out... I got lucky already had made it for replacing strut front strut cartridge on GM's...
