Hello All, 500B s/n 1010100594 with a mechanical issue that has got me scratching my head.

What I know so far...
I can bar the engine over pretty much 360 degrees and then it locks up, then I can go all the way back the other way and then locks. It clunks when it stops, and then ticks again when I back it off. Other than that It spins very easy with the injectors out. Sound is coming from the rear passenger side of the motor around piston #8. pulled the pan and con-rods and crank looks ok. Pulled passenger side valve covers and the pushrods and valve tops are still in one piece. Valves look like they cycle correctly when I bar the motor over. Small driveshaft under the cab floor does not turn when I bar over.

Has anyone got any idea what the issue may be? Possibly a bent, chipped or dropped valve? Is there anything that runs off of the flywheel that could be jamming up in the gears? It amost sounds like there is something loose getting jammed, and then releases when I back it off. Maybe possibly in the hydraulic pump itself locking up ? Any inspection cover I can take off?

I’m planning on picking up a bore scope camera to look in the cylinders next week. Really good machine otherwise. Undercarriage looks brand new and very low hours. Just need to get it running :)

Have you pulled the starter and looked at the drive and inside the bell housing?

Strange, it must have happened not running, else there would have been a major malfunction if something locked it running.

Good idea, flywheel teeth might be messed up.

I bought it how it sits now, never seen it run. Price was right and it was otherwise in good condition

I had a tractor with a lifter rusted in the block. Couldn’t understand why it stopped when the pistons were free. When the nose of the cam lobe came up, rotation stopped. Penetrating oil and a soft punch loosened it up.

Could be, the inside of the engine looked very clean though, lots of oil everywhere, no moisture. I’m starting to think someone bumped the starter while it was running and screwed up the flywheel possibly

Diesels have near zero volume combustion chambers. Even a a piece of "dropped in" trash/metal can lock up the piston. Will a bore scope fit in the injector hole? Jim

check the the bell housing and torque converter that some one did not drop the pipe plug from the converter. not sure if the 500s had the torque that had to be filled but it worth a look .should be a tear drop cap on the bell housing .like i said NOT sure if they have it . under carriage parts are the same as a Cat D5 good luck . have not worked on one in over 30 years

I’m not sure. It doesn’t look like it has a gear shift or a clutch so I’d imagine it’s torque converter. Is this inspection plate on top or bottom? If that’s the issue can I reinstall it from the inspection plate or will I have to pull the power shift unit?

Got it free. Just put a big pipe wrench and snipe on the front shaft and pulled until it let go. Barred it over about 20 times and the sticky spot got better and better every time. Pulled the starter, there is slot of rust on the flywheel, Teeth look pretty worn too

Got the Massey running and driving! Turns out it was a stuck intake valve but it started behaving and it runs great.
The problem is it doesn’t like to turn left. The right brake grabs right away, but when turning left it either grabs right away or hesitates and must be held for perhaps 4 second before stopping. Here’s a description in the manual of how the system works

“The power shift is a constant mesh 2 speed type. Operator actuates valve spools which send pressurized oil to the proper clutches. The brakes are a series of internally and externally toothed discs fitted together alternately. Brakes are controlled by pedals which activate distributor valves, which cut off the pressurized oil flow from the power shift directional clutches and sends it to the brakes”

So in short, what’s happening is when I press left brake, i know that it stops power to the track but it’s hesitant to brake it. Also seems to act up more at higher rpms. Anyone know if this sounds like a mechanical failure in the brakes, or maybe a leaking brake valve, and where to find any parts or rebuild kits out there for this old Italian dinosaur.
