forney welding leads

I just wanted to get back with the results of my search for welding lead plugs. I called Forney in Colorado, today, and was able to order two plugs. They weren't cheap, but the shipping was exorbent. $14.00 shipping, from Colorado to Washington state? I bet that the two of the don't weigh a half pound. any way they are on their way!

"just a way to jack up the price! "

It certainly is! I ordered some seals for a air over hydraulic pump. Special seals, only available from the mfg.

Didn't ask about the shipping, just ordered and waited.

Here came the invoice, $26 shipping!

And they came in a padded envelope, regular USPS.

I see that a lot on Ebay, a good price on something, then outrageous shipping!

I guess they just throw stuff out there hoping someone will bite!

I have my own UPS account. When I run into high shipping charges I just tell them to send me the package size, weight, and address, and I'll have UPS pick it up. When they say "that's not our policy" or "we can't do that" or some such excuse, I can safely assume their shipping cost is rigged.

I don't like high shipping charges either. But as an occasional eBay seller, I understand the reasons. Most companies recover all their cost of shipping with that charge, all, not just the postage. Labor, packaging material, postage, labels, envelops, boxes etc. A lot goes into it beyond what is paid to USPS, UPS Fedex, etc.

When I sell a smaller item online, I need to gather a box, add bubble wrap, tape, print a label (using expensive ink) on a purchased gum label, and take it to the PO or drop off at a Fedex location. Probably 30 minutes total, certainly at least 15.

Not a problem for me, retired selling occasionally. But if I were paying an employee 1/2 or 1/4 hour to do that, I'd certainly want to recoup the cost.

But, I'd do it by upping the selling price on all items just a few cents, recover the cost from everyone not just a few. Accomplishes the same thing, but hides the cost from the customer so as not to irritate them.

Yes it may have been a mistake! I was not sure, of the plugs OD, and figured that if I got them from Forney, and talked to the guy at Forney, then I could be more certain that they would fit my holes on the welder. Who knows?

Looked like Oliver 500 Wa's price of $10 including postage was a pretty good offer.

Another YT'er is getting them. I'm happy that they will go to someone that has a need. Way better than sitting on a shelf in my shop for my kids to toss when I'm gone. They'll have plenty of that to do already :) .

Yes, and didn't ebay a few years ago make sellers pay ebays commission rate on the total transaction? Not just the sell price, but now seller pays commission on the sale and shipping price.

I don't sell on eBay, but that makes sense. At one time exorbitant shipping charges were the norm rather than the exception on eBay, probably because sellers were avoiding commissions by padding the shipping charges. Rather than sell an item for 10 bucks with free shipping, the could charge five dollars plus another five for shipping and avoid half the commission. You don't see overpriced shipping charges so much these days on eBay, and free shipping is typical on small items. The new policy would explain why.

I made a pair of side shields Fo an A.C. D-10 and shipped them to a guy by UPS. I didn't have any packaging, so I let UPS package them. That cost a lot more than I figured it would be.

No, it wasn't a Graco, can't remember what it was.

It was a pressure intensifier pump, turned 100 PSI of air into several thousand PSI oil.

We have "UPS Stores" up here. I had to return an item to the seller for service under warranty (A Milky pasteurizer). I used the UPS Store. It was well over $100.00 at the time, 2-3 years ago. Same circuit board died and the service tech, a nice guy, wanted me to send it back again. I explained the cost involved and he told me sending a brand new one for them was under $20.00. Shipping can be a real rip off.

It got out of hand. I remember seeing milling machine cutters for .99 plus $100 dollars for shipping. The combined price was where
is should be but ebay was only getting commission on the .99 cents. Them taxing both costs was inevitable.

Ultimately item and shipping costs were juggled by market forces to where it evened out. Some sellers still have outrageous
shipping and they simply don't sell as much. Their items stay listed forever because they priced themselves out of the market.
