Garden hose mildew

Here is a picture of three so-called commercial-grade 3/4 inch garden hoses. The one in the center is the oldest, a 10 year old Swan. The next oldest is on the bottom (or left, depending on how the picture is rotated); it's an Apex that's about six years old. And the heavily mildewed one on the top (or right) is a three year old Swan.

It's really interesting to me that the oldest hose is nearly free from mildew stains, while the newest one is nearly black. My guess is the newer the hose, the greater the recycled rubber content.

Another annoying thing about the newest hose is it has aluminum ends. These tend to corrode when you connect them to a hose with brass fittings. Other than cost, I can't think of any reason Swan switched from brass to aluminum.

When brass touches steel or aluminum, brass always wins.

Why guess is the mildew prefers vinyl which most of the newer consumer grade hoses are made of now-a-days.

The better grades of real rubber not so much.

Gardena hoses and fittings are used a lot in Australia , they withstand the harsh UV radiation very well . They are , or at least used to be made in Western Germany .

While doing some cleaning in the barn I came across a length of old black rubber hose. I recognized it as coming from a source that I would not have used past 1977. I assumed that it would be stiff and unusable but it is still supple and has brass ends. It is the best length of hose that I have now!
