OT: woodpecker update..still here

All,

I want to be sure I am on record here that I will not kill a protected bird. My poor attempt at humor did not come through as I had thought, I'm sorry about that.

As far as deterrent, well, I may eventually get on the roof and see if there is something simple I can attach to persuade this critter to go elsewhere.

The non-lethal paintball gun was my attempt to dissuade this animal from tearing my place up.

So as it sits, I am scared to climb up there and crawl to the ragged edge (6/12 pitch two stories). It's not worth getting injured over. The rattling noise is bothersome, and I am unsure of damage, yet.

Maybe I will look into a drone camera to survey stuff.

You could hire some one to do it for you that way your safe and if you hire the right person they should be able to fix your bird problem

How about a pair of binoculars. Drones are kinda cool, but need practice to be functional. Can you get to the spot being pecked from inside, (attic vent or?) Jim

Janicholson,

You read my mind.

I did take a set of binoculars outside. Unfortunately the terrain drops swiftly and at the almost perfect angle to preclude me from seeing the roof edge I think this fellow is pecking at.

I still think I might climb up a nearby tree (a few feet) to get the proper viewing angle.

My hope is the fellow is pecking away at a pvc pipe vent, and not the roofing or eave.

I am also looking for someone that does drone work for hire. But, Minnesota is a mess right now.

If the "bird with no name" is attracted to the pvc vent pipe due to the amplified sound he can make, go to lowes etc. And get a lead vent pipe flashing that you can slip over the pvc loosely.
He will be so annoyed at the thud he will go elsewhere.I

Maybe

Double07,

That is a really good idea.

For now, I am trying to get the confidence to scamper on the roof. Maybe I can hire the neighbor kid. He is fearless, and has cat-like balance.

Naw, I will find someone bonded and insured for that kind of work, and pay accordingly.

I've found that having 2 or 3 people and a long rope goes a long way in being safe on a roof

Another method might be to staple a fine mesh net over the area. (the kind used too keep birds out of berry bushes etc.) Jim

I live for the most part right on the coast , Seagulls can be a nuisance especially if they soil the roof you collect rainwater from . These are used and work very well , they also keep just about any other bird except Ravens from landing on your roof [ Australian Ravens are really clever birds ].

It only takes one to control the average roof .

It's funny at the time when I saw the original post I was watching the Home Improvement show and Tim was going to go after the woodpecker with a radio controlled helicopter but it went after him instead.

My aunt had a woodpecker that would come and peck on her steel oil storage tank which was outside her bedroom window. Sounded like a machine gun. Early morning. Turns out, he was trying to attract a mate. Went away after he found one. We all got a good laugh out of it.
