Garage door opener virus

An unknown virus has claimed a second
garage door opener this year. Any thing I
can do to keep my other openers healthy?
I have a total of 10 openers. I'm leaning
towards replacing with a liftmaster. I
installed one on new pole barn 10 high
door. Other pole barn 8 ft door opener
is the latest one to die.

What is happening to them ? I had several over the years strip the plastic teeth off the gear inside. I keep one on hand. Get them pretty cheap off ebay.

I would be looking at the springs to make sure you are getting the correct assist. Also, do you lubricate the system? That never hurts at all.

I would be interested in what brand is failing and where the problem is. Drive belt, chain, gears...??

Funny you should mention that.

My parents built the house where I now live in '67. After Mom passed in '07 we sold our house and moved in here. 3 acres in town 30x60 shop. I removed the garage door opener and stored it when converting the garage to a bedroom and bath.

The shop had sliding doors front and back. A pain when there was snow and/or ice. So 3-4 years ago I installed an overhead door in the front. Last week I decided to dig out the stored opener and stop lifting it manually. Tested and installed Friday. Noisy, so I lubed it all up. Now it's quiet and works as well as ever.

Overhead door brand, model 100, from 1967. Guess they don't make 'em like that anymore!

How old were failed openers?

It could just be statistical failure, with 10 you have a pretty good sample size.

David,
The first death was 27.
The second was 11, too young.
I paid to have a liftmaster in in new barn.
I may try to install this liftmaster myself.

I too have had them wear out the worm drive gear inside. Probably my fault as one should lube that thing regularly. I did have an electrical malfunction knock out the control boards inside of mine.So mine have had some maintenance in their 25yr life. gobble

I use the cheap Chamberlins on my three doors on my garage. The plastic gears will wear out and I just go by another one and change out the motor unit. Two of them lasted over 20 years and the third one I just added a couple years ago. The funny thing is the ones I brought 30 years ago were about 150 bucks a piece and the last ones I brought were around a 120. Although I think they have cheapened them up some.
