Peterson Surface Grinder

Interesting.

Was not able to find much, but found someone on Practical Machinist who said this:
[i:72bf315d83]Before specialized automotive machine shops were common the service garages did a lot of valve grinding & ring / bearing jobs. These machines were common and did a good enough job flattening out cylinder heads & manifolds. Takes some operator technique but maybe not what you would call machinist skill. Set wheel height so it just hits the high spots as you slide the head around and keep going till it all shines.[/i:72bf315d83]

Definitely doesn't look like it would meet much of today's more exacting standards.

I remember seeing one of those in a shop that specialized in head work.

That's all they did was valve jobs, head repair, guides, surfacing, mag flux, etc.

I tried using them for a while, the quality never was there, they went out of business shortly after I quit using them.

I never checked a head that had been leveled by them, I was just out of high school so didn't really know how to check something like that.

But I see no possible way that can work! The only down feed it would have is gravity, combined with the influence of the operators hands on it...

Not a good combination!

You'd be about as well sliding it around on a concrete floor! lol

Definitely wouldn't meet todays standards but back in the day did a good enough job. I worked in a automotive machine shop that had one of those surface grinders, we used it mostly to surface manifolds. We also had a Van Norman rotary broach which did a much more precision job. It did take a bit of practice.

I had an exhaust manifold surfaced on one just like that, 531 JD engine in a chopper. No problems.

I have a machine tool company surface grinder with a
magnetic Chuck. This thing is heavy. I need to sell if
interested.
