O.T. computer Windows version

Good evening: I have an HP laptop with windows 8.1. It has a message telling me I should install updates from Microsoft. Not sure if this will install version 10.0. It seems genuine Microsoft update, should I let it update? Also if it offers version 10.0, should I accept that? Any knowledgeable replies appreciated!!

What ever you decide make sure you make a backup. I know a lot on this forum like windows 10 but I don't like it that much. It is basically windows 7 but with an added layer of crap thrown in to frustrate the user. Win10 is a free download.

I have windows 8.1 at work and it updates every once in a while. It won't download 10. I had the old 7 and
downloaded the free 10 and I don't mind it.Google chrome works like it always did.

I didnt think Microsoft was supporting Windows 8 anymore. Most updates are security updates and should be installed if you use the internet. If you have a HP computer, it has a utility in it to help with updates. Its called Support Assistant. Be very careful about clicking on any link. Place your cursor on the link and look at the bottom left of the screen and see if the address is Microsoft's.

I bought a refurbished computer recently and the first thing it did was over 100 updates. When it was done the computer was
unusable. I managed to do a system restore back to the day I first booted up and it's working again. I turned off the updates
before getting online. The only problem now is it's saying the version of windows I have is counterfeit.

Microsoft is still supporting Windows 8.1 and you should let
it update for better security. You can download and install Windows 10 for free
using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
Just download and run the tool and select "Upgrade This Computer".
Media Creation Tool

Microsoft is supporting Windows 8 until January 2023, so you're good for awhile. You should certainly install any updates labeled "critical."

Windows 7 is officially no longer supported so those folks should upgrade to Win10. It's not really safe to go without security updates anymore.

I have to disagree with you that support has ended. There are so many windows 7 users that MS will need to continue support, at least in a minimal way to those users.

Nope, it's definitely over, with the exception of a few large corporations with deep pockets. Win 7 extended support ended January 14. There may be a few high-profile patches but nothing more. Same thing happened when XP went end of life.

In January I upgraded 4 Windows 8.1 computers to Windows 10 using the
Windows 10 Media Creator Tool and checking the "Upgrade This Computer"
box. It's free. There is
an exception if your computer has a volume license you can't install
it free.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on this computer last weekend. (My other computer uses Ubuntu, so.....)
The big push is that we do our taxes on this computer, my wife is a computer programmer and she's seen what damages can be done by outside forces.
Of course, that still doesn't make us immune, but at least she sleeps better at night.
The upgrade took most of an afternoon and the notes say you can use your computer while it's upgrading, although I didn't.
This computer accepted it without a hiccup, but that's not true on all cases.

To answer your question, you can view the list of the updates to be installed. If you don't want to upgrade your windows version, uncheck that particular update.

Good evening: I did the download/revision, it still shows windows 8.1, and seems to be ok. Thanks for suggestions.

not a hi-jack of the thread but a side street... been contemplating upgrade to windows 10.. I have a Dell Optiplex 390 skinny desktop, with intel I3 2100 dual core...8 GB memory and 137 gb free disk space...

I know 10 will probably load on this machine but will it be so slow and painful to use it wouldn't be worth it ?? would upgrading to a I5 processor be worth the money/time to get 10 to run on it

sorry for the side track... but it';s along the same lines

10 should perform at least similar to 7 (or 8), I've seen it be a bit faster, but of course a lot of variables. I'd just start with what you have. Plenty of ram, I'd upgrade to an SSD if it isn't already, they are relatively cheap.
