Transformer for video doorbell

I bought a nice video doorbell and not too happy with it but it does a good job of coming on and taking a picture with motion censer. I now bought a cheep one just to use as a wireless security camera near shop. Anyway the voltage is 20v ac. Manual says to connect red wire on right terminal on doorbell. First there was no wires on output side on transformer and no color code on the transformer or doorbell. I thought with the ac from the transformer there was no polarity. Anyone's thought will be appreciated

Hello ldj,

Are you sure it is 20 volts? Home Depot has one that is compatible
with all video door bells. There are none rated at 20 volts?
One has 3 outputs 8 volts 10VA, 16 v 10VA, and 24 v 20VA,

GUIDO.

You are correct. There is no polarity for the output of a 24V doorbell transformer. The output is typically "floating" (isolated from ground), so it doesn't matter which way you hook it up.

On the transformer it says 16v ac but multi meter shows 20 v ac. I don't know how old it is but it has been in my shop for several years.

It will be fine. The 16 Vrms transformer rating is at rated load. I doubt your camera draws very much current, and your multimeter probably draws even less.
