Doing some welding

My company bought this flatbed trailer at an auction and didn't look it over well enough. There is some rust and rot. Lol

So my job is to fix it. I'm going to replace all those rotted crossmembers and patch the main beams where they are rotted. Started by getting rid of the air tank and all the hoses to have access then cutting out the rot from the main beams.

Once the rot was all cut out and cleaned up I started replacing the plate.

That's where I'm at now. After I get the main beams patches I'll start on replacing the crossmembers. Should be a few days work.
 
That looks like what they call "job security". I would think sand blasting would be a good first step though. Then cut and weld, then paint.
 
Good work, Jon. It's nice to have equipment to flip it over--would not be a nice job to do that when it's on the wheels. I hope those folks know what a prize they got when they hired you!! Gary.
 
Good grief Jon, you should have just built a new trailer from scratch. *lol*

Don't know how ya'll got that trailer in there that way, but bet that was a fun job also.

....Maybe the trailer had really great tires, so they thought the trailer was just as good? *lol*
 
I already did that on my stepdeck trailer a few years ago. The easiest way to change the cross members is to cut one side rail off then cut out the cross members. Then they will go back through the pierce holes in the frame and weld in easier than cutting notches in the main frame patches. Ultimately they will need to be pieced in at the holes for the cross members.
I changed both decks from stem to stern.
 
No deck replacement here and all the crossmember on the deck are aluminum and in good shape. Only need to replace the lower crossmembers.
 
That looks like a job. I ended up completely rebuilding the dump body on my truck. The crossmembers were rotted out and it had a wood deck that someone welded steel over and the wood was all rotten also.
