when setting the air pressure on a well water pressure tank is it 2 pounds under or over the cut in pressure on the pressure switch? Thanks for your help Neil

Under, and I was told 5 pounds. You want the pump to cut in before the tank level bottoms out. Hope I got that right, it can be confusing.

The standard is 2 PSI BELOW the cut in setting on the pump switch. It seems most pump switches installed today are 40--60, so the tank pressure should be 38 PSI, which most pressure well tanks you buy come factory preset at...

2 psi under, and because it's hard to find 2 gauges that agree that close I have a procedure for verifying it's correct. Turn off the power to the pump with some pressure in the system, then slowly bleed off water pressure and listen to the switch. When it clicks, watch the pressure gauge. It should drop another 2 psi and then quickly drop to zero, if everything is correct.

As said, rare for 2 gauges to read the same.

Just get it close to the pressure the pump cycles on, it will be close enough to work.

Hello HNM,

Tank bladder comes pre charged from the factory with 38# pressure. Pressure switch is usually set @ 40# cut in pressure, and 60# cut out pressure.

AS you can see there is a 2# lower pressure in the tank's bladder then the cut in pressure. If you need to change the low water pressure cut in ,just match the bladder pressure @ 2# lower,

As others have said, it's rare that your tire pressure gauge will read the same as your system pressure gauge. But there's no harm if the tank pressure is a little low; it will still work fine. But if the tank pressure is too high, you'll see the system pressure suddenly drop just before the pump cuts in. If that happens, just let a little air out of the tank; once there's no sudden pressure drop you're good to go.

I like MarkB answer best. So if tank pressure is low it will work but the closer tank pressure is to cut in, the more capacity it will have. I have one system that I noticed that pressure droop just before cut in. I have since raised switch setting, could probably use a little higher tank pressure now.
