2000 GMC 1500 front brakes.

Sometimes when stopping I get a real hard pedal until almost stopped. I have pulled the anti lock brake fuse out, so I have normal brakes which work
well except it has turned all the brake lights on thr dash on. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks.

You have either an ABS sensor going bad or the ABS control module itself is going bad. On my 1996 GMC 1500 I just drive it with the fuse pulled and ignore the light.

years ago there was a recall on the wheel sensors, they removed them, sanded the rust off the ends and reinstalled them.

Does the hard pedal also have a rapid pulsation or buzz, indicating the ABS system is activating?

Often I have found front wheel hub bearings (unit bearing) failing and getting slack. The ABS/wheel speed sensors are built into the bearing and the slack causes erratic wheel speed signals which causes false ABS activation. Raise the front wheels off the ground and see if there is slack in the bearings.

ABS sensor is getting weak and dropping out at slow speed. It will not set a code as computer thinks all is well and is just doing it's job by activating the ABS. Only way to find the one acting up is with a GOOD scan tool and someone who knows how to use it. I am a mechanic and run into this quite often. Most always one of the front sensors and they are a part of the wheel bearing. On some models you can buy a sensor separate and put on but if it has many miles at all on it just makes sense to replace the bearing.

If you replace the sensor then shortly after the bearing goes bad you say no problem I will get a bearing without a sensor and use the new sensor I just installed WRONG the new sensor will not fit the new bearing/hub : ( you are stuck with it a sensor you can not use... BTDT

Lets not forget the rear brakes can cause false ABS also so its not a cut and dry deal...

Try unplugging the anti lock brake module and see if all the lights go away. That is how I had to do it to disable the 1996 dodge ram anti stop brakes.
