Broken vise screw

I have a Reed 4 1/2 inch bench vise that I need the adjusting screw for. Anyone know where I may get one or a machine shop that can make one??

Any competent machinist can make one. The question is how much you like this vice. The previous owner of my lathe made them, but It is beyond my skill level. It is an acme or buttress thread. I made some vices with USS Coarse. I hear that a Reed vise is good quality and is worth more than an import, but the machine shop will likely charge more to make the screw than an import cost

You can look around and buy acme threaded rod that will hopefully match your screw. From there, cut the handle hub off, drill it as deep as possible for the acme rod to fit, then braze together. Did this to a medium size vice years ago and still going strong, though I don't use a cheater on my vice handle.

Having a piece cut by a machinist won't be cheap.

Good luck.....

(quoted from post at 21:07:47 01/14/20) Surplus Center carries ACME threaded rod and nuts:

McMaster - Carr does to and shipping won't be more then the part.

Thanks for the info!

I don't deal much with Surplus Center for that very reason, but also have not looked at McMaster-Carr. Now the only problem will be remembering to look there next time I need to.....which is not very often.
