Drill bit, tip turned blue

Recently I posed about overheating a drill bit and the tip turned blue.
Some suggested removing the blue tip and reshapen.
Can't remember who made that suggestion, Thanks alot.
It worked. I put dull bit in cordless drill, held bit at close to the angle I needed, spun the bit next to grinder and slowly removed about 1/4 inch of the tip. Cooling bite occasionly with water.
Sharpeded bit and good as new.

So many thanks for that tip.
Geo.

Good advice.
I couldn't sharpen the blue steel.
Thought I lost my touch sharpening bits.

He was suggesting using antifreeze as a cutting lubricant. I'd be more inclined to use diesel myself, lots less expensive and not as toxic. You have to flush the antifreeze if it gets someplace pets can get to it.

A drill bit company rep told me that years ago.all I can say is you only need a couple of drops. Not a whole blazted bottle and a hazmat team. Would any of you drink drill cutting lube?

Bret,
If you sharpen a bit it will spin out
continuous metal, like curtly fries.
I was drilling a harden steel. Pushed bit
too much, bit dulled then overheated. My
fault. After that bit didn't want to
take an edge.
I don't use anything when using lathe,
turn it dry, no oil antifreeze. Spin out
curly continuous metal.
