Kubota F2880 deck gear box.. $$$

The deck gear box took a dump on my F2880.. 12 years and 1300 hours its the first "major money" I have had to spend on it. Other than a set of tires and routine maint..

Check prices on a new one from the local Case dealer that also sell and services Kubota. They quoted $1200 for a complete new box. $150 for a rebuild kit (bearings, seals, shims etc) and another $300+ for the gear set (does not come with the kit). . Ouch..lol

The $150 rebuild kit I can live with. But $300+ for two small gears?? Checked everywhere and can find the gears to fit an RCK60 Deck for $200. But nothing for my deck which is a RCK72-F36. Two places had them for over $500. No not paying that much for them.

So it looks like a new complete gear box will go on it Monday after work. I may have to pay a core charge on the box. For I want to keep and rebuild the bad one for a spare.

Cause for damage.. A plugged gear case vent. The oil would build pressure once hot in the gear box and forced the oil past the seal in the bottom and into the spindle where it would not show any signs of leaking. The guy simply ran the gear box dry of oil and burnt evergthing to a crisp.. No I am not upset with him. The guy is a 71 year old widower and mowes the farm for free just to have something to do to keep himself busy. I help him out anytime he needs anything and slip him a few bills now and then. He is a good ole guy and we try to take good care of him.

Well $550.00 is cheaper than 1200. I get $120.00 to rebuild the boxes IF the case and shafts are
good and I can use your gears. $450 with new gears. Working on getting after market gears made.
Should have them sometime latter this fall.

I'm just curious why there may be a core charge on a new gearbox if they don't offer a rebuilt gearbox ???

I am not sure about the core charge. I did not ask about one. Guy just said bring the old box in Monday and he will have a new one waiting. I would like to keep the old one if possible, even if it means paying a core charge and rebuild it.

The gears and bottom seal are what was damaged beyond repair. The shafts are good and bearings were dry but are still good (no binding or rough feel once lubed)..

The cheapest I can find the gear set for an RCK72P-36 deck is almost $600. I can get them for an RCK60 deck all day long for $150-$200. But they will not work in my gear box.

I will pick up a new gear box tomorrow. If I keep the core I may send it to you later this Fall if you can rebuild an RCK72P-F36 gear box for just $450..

I would use cornhead gearbox grease in that instead of oil, that's what I been running in all my gearboxes and have yet had issues, especially if you have had one leaking a little

Thought of grease. But have one concern.

The gear box has three non sealed bearings, one on the output shaft on the bottom and two on the input shaft (front and back of the case). The input bearings are lubed by oil slung from the gears.

Will JD cornhead grease lube the input bearings while operating? I have used cornhead lube greasable bearings. But would like to find a gear oil 3 or four times thicker than 90 weight.

Got the new gear box and will install it once I find a better oil/ grease than 80-90 to put in it.

I use EP 00 grease. Tractor Supply has started keeping it around here. It is somewhat thinner than corn head grease.

O K take this for what it is worth, but I would not use corn head grease. For the last 12 years we
have been using 89/90 and Lucas Oil treatment mixed in those boxes. Failure rates dropped and I can
take the heat gun and show you operating temps are also down quit a bit. Gears and bearings would
have built your box but if you are hiring Kubota at shop rate cheaper to buy the new box.

My dads new kubota gearbox went out with
like 20 hours on it. It had oil because it
was slung everywhere. The worse part was
it took 3 months to get a new one and
would not give us a loaner to use.

My local Kubota/Case dealer had one in stock. Just shy of $1200. They had a gear set for $625 and a "rebuild" kit (bearings, caps, shims, seals etc) for $175. I went ahead got a new box and kept the old one to rebuild later this fall.

The dealer mech reccomended Lucas 00 oil. He is from the South and said it is what the majority run in "cotton spindle" gear boxes down around where grew up. He gave me 100 hours to try it. If the box fails within 100 hours he will replace it at no charge.
