Masonry question

Good friend had a contractor bail on him.
Needs to get fireplace in his living room complete.
Going to do an engineered stone veneer on the wall.

Here is my question.
What should I use for an adhesive on the fireplace ?hearth? or ledge...or whatever you want to call it. (Circled in red in my picture).
His is made of soapstone.
Same thinset I am using on the wall? Construction adhesive?
Obviously a tractor forum is the place to ask...

I would use type N mortar. The stuff they sell in the box stores isn't quite type N, I add a little Portland cement to the mix.

So what did you end up using?
The wife picked up the stone for ours a while back, my late brother was the stone layer, I've never done it.
Trying to decide if I want to try it or hire someone.
Not real excited about hiring it done, could end up with a over priced shoddy job or half finished never completed project.

Level on frame underneath it was not spectacular. Used the
thinset mortar we were using. Created a good bed for it. If it
was level, we could have gotten away with nothing...that
sucker was heavy.
His contractor flaked which is how I got into it. Lol.

He has a half-finished job...but, it is better than his none-
finished job. I?m hoping he finishes without me-

It's not difficult. You just need to be sure to put some brick ties on the mortar line here and there. Sometimes the house shifts and you don't want the stone falling off the wall.
