I need a new paint gun

I've had a Devilbiss for 20 years or
more. Painted a bunch of tractors and
other stuff with it.
I think it's called a siphon type - has
the paint container on the bottom.
Have been looking at new guns and they
are all gravity flow - paint container
on top.
Ive never used one of those. No one has
the old type anymore except cheap $50
ones at Menards, etc.
Are the gravity units any good?
I'm not a pro painter but am better than
a beginner so would like a gun to match
my skills
Need to stay under $200 for it.
Any recommendations on a brand or model?
PS, Not a Harbor Freight unit please.
Don't want to start a debate or
conversation about HF here. I live less
than a mile from one and simply do not
shop there. Period. End of story.
A Binks or another Devillbiss would be
nice.
Thanks!

Too bad. I bought one of those $10 HF gravity flow with a 20% coupon for $8 along with a package of disposable paint containers for it. Was amazed. Did as good a job as my Binks ever did and the clean up was...well...disposable.

The gravity flow hvlp gun work fine. The down side is you need another container to mix your paint in. Also, I find sometimes it is harder to shoot paint into corners and such.

The type of gun depends on the type of job. Gravity guns are good for most glamour auto type repairs but would drive you crazy painting the underside of a tractor, or car for that matter. A "siphon" gun and 2 qt pressure pot is good for heavy non metallic paints, spraying all directions, quickly. If your Devilbiss still has a even spray pattern maybe all you need is the 2 qt pressure pot. Complete control of the amount of material coming out of the gun, fewer refills, lighter and spray direction won't stop flow.

I've always liked the Sharps. Good gun's and just feel better in my hand. I have both types along with a small Devilbiss touch up gun.

I think the quality is about the same with Binks, Devilbiss, and Sharps but the Sharps fits my hand better and isn't near as tiring.

You might want to check prices online when you find one that fits you. I paid less than half for my hvlp compared to my local automotive paint store. Wouldn't have even thought to check but the wait time was too long from them. All they keep in stock now a days are from the land of almost right.

Get a Devilbiss Finishline 4FLG-670 Solvent based Gravity Feed. They are about $220.00 on amazon. You will be glad you did. I have painted several tractors with mine. I am getting ready to buy another one. 2 guns are great when doing 2 stage paint jobs.

if you still have the old gun, have you checked on getting it rebuilt? i stll have my old binks 7 and 9 guns, and my devilbiss jga 450 and 504 guns, but due to epa regs in our area, we cannot use them in the shop. we are using both sata and arnest iwata guns and use the 3m pps cup system. we are shooting ppg enviorbase water borne paints to be epa compliant. these are the top cup gravity feed guns in hvlp. you may be able to find some good used guns on ebay, or check at your local body shop supplier. often they have trade in guns and a quality gun will have rebuild kits available.

I have bought seal kits for it before but haven't looked into a rebuild.
A good, reputable brand is the reason I don't want a China Maid.
You can get parts for them.
I primed these rims yesterday and just wasn't getting any paint out of my old Devillbiss.
I took it apart again this AM to clean it really good and wonder if I may have found the problem.
There is a tiny pinhole in the tank. I didn't notice it before but shaking some lacquer thinner in it I noticed the leak.
Looks like it oxidized through somehow.
I will try patching it with something and see. Do you think that might be the problem? Hate to get rid of what's been a great tool and will save it if I can.

i dont think a pinhole in the cup would do it,as siphon guns are vented at the lid.. more than likely there is dried paint up inside the venture. see if you can find a product called naked gun cleaner. it works great to dissolve dried paint in the spray guns.

If you are used to the siphon sprayer I don't think you would like the gravity feed gun. The cup on top seems to always get in the way. I keep one to use with catalyzed paint where you are trying to use every drop. The siphon sprayer always has an ounce or so that won't spray. If you are not using a finish that you can't save for another day there is no point.

Binks and Devilbiss are no longer the top dogs. Now it is all Iwata and Sata as top line guns . The Iwatas have incredible atomization. and the Satas spray real nice. Alot is the operator of the gun as a good painter can use an H-F gun and make it paint well. Im not saying modern Devibiss is junk it is quality that just lost popularity. Gearge Barris always said Devilbiss sprays better than Binks. If you old gun is a Devibiss JGA you probably can rebuild it like new. You may not even need a new gun.

Devilbiss has a kit that lets you insert a plastic liner in the cup. Once installed and sealed you can spray upside down if need be, with no spills!

I have a 620g, a little more than the hoped for budget, but it comes with 3 tips, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5. Handles bases, single stage and clears.. With most higher end guns, those are near 200 bucks each, extra. I've had this one since around 2002, when it was a new design. Great gun.

You'll love the gravity feed. Much easier to clean well and uses less thinner/cleaner to do so.

Devilbiss parts are relatively inexpensive and readily available. Unlike some other brands. everybody has accidents, say you drop your gun and damage the tip. Price a new air cap for Sata, and try to find one online. Expensive and only available through their network of dealers. Really nice tools, but just to pricy for me.

I bought a sharp 30 years ago. It still works.
Have an old Binks which the Chinese have cloned.
I'm not a professional painter. I use all three guns and only difference I see is price.

The biggest problem with the HF gravity feed guns is the mason jar type lid on the cup. The slightest trace of paint that gets in the threads will glue the lid on.

Check MSC. Enter paint gun in their search blank. They list both gravity and siphon, everything from Speedy to Devilbiss and Binks, touch up to 1 qt. siphon. minimum dollars to near 400 that I saw.

The attraction of gravity feed (HVLP) guns is they don't waste as much product with overspray as siphon guns.

A 20 oz. cup on an HVLP gun will cover about the same area as a 32 oz. cup on a siphon gun. If you do a lot of painting, that alone is a big plus.

I use HVLP for everything except primer. Mainly because with a siphon gun you can shoot primer on something and hang the gun back up till you need to prime something again. Then you just stir up what's in the cup. You can't do that with an HVLP gun.

I have about five of those HF purple gravity guns. When they're on special for $8 or $9, that's cheaper than a replacement cup.

Just something to keep in mind. You need to buy a packing kit for your gun which will cost $$ and you will have to buy a paint gun soaking solution to clean off the paint inside it from 20 years ago at the minimum.
