2011 GMC half ton crew cab brakes

At 154K it's time to replace the front
break pads. I'm looking for advice as to
what type material the pads are made of.
I'd also appreciate brand/store advice.
I've watched several videos on n YouTube
and it doesn't seem difficult. Any tricks
or tips are also appreciated. My son has a
2011 Chevy Silverado and I'll probably do
them too soon. Thanks in advance.

just did my 2010 Silverado 1500 . cheaper and easer to replace rotors and pads, I suggest drilled rotors a noticeable increase in braking

The only thing I would reccomend is. Stay away from any brake pads that have a "lifetime warranty".

Sure the pads will last longer. But you will be replacing brake rotors or entire hubs depending on what setup you have before the pads are even broken in.

Slotted/drilled rotors = EBC reds
Solid rotors = Wagner

No drilled or slotted rotors if you drive off road. Mud and small stones get in there and raise hell with pads and rotors.

The semi metallic are the preferred general purpose pads. That's probably what came on it.

They all have their advantages and disadvantages, a trade off for whatever suits your personal needs best.

As for rotors, the price is so close for new, rather than having them turned, I just replace them.

Be sure to check the wheel bearings for looseness while you're there.

I did not know chebbys had brakes... Ha Ha the worst brakes of the bunch... Napa Fleet are Napa Adaptive One work the best for me chebbys need all the help they can get...

Akebono if you want the best...

Original lasted 150,000 miles. I personally would go to the GM dealer and get GM OE pads. Not AC Delco Professional. OE will be about $150 for the set, and come in a brown box. Do that and hopefully you'll get another 150,000 miles. If you've been happy with how it stopped, why change things?

Thanks all! I'm sorry I didn't give more information. Both my son's and my truck are strictly a hiway vehicles. It may be a couple of weeks before I have time to do the work, I'll let y'all know how things turn out.

I put a set of Wagner ceramic pads on our 2012 Acadia and have been impressed with how well it stops now.

154K on the original front pads is remarkable. It might be about time to do the rear brakes as well. Here in Michigan, because of the salt, I always plan on replacing the rotors at each brake job. You may be able to get away with just turning yours. Turning the rotors will save some money, but means you have to make an extra trip to the store. Note that many auto parts stores stock aftermarket rotors, but will order OEM rotors for just a little bit more money.

Thanks Mark. We don't have the salt problems y'all do. My rotors look really good, I'm debating on having them turned or replacing them. It's only a mile or so to the nearest O'Reilly's. I'm going to ask them how long it takes for them to turn the rotors and that will make my decision easier.

Our local tire place stopped turning drums and rotors years ago.

You can buy new cheaper than what they wanted for turing a set.

Modern brake pads last much longer, with longer pad wear life, it also wears rotors more. Often when pads wear out, the rotor might need to be cut near or below specs. Turning rotors also make them thinner, making them more likely to overheat and more prone to wear unevenly and cause pulsation.

Speaking of them, how is O'Reillys? We just saw one here in NY for the first time! Dident have time to stop in and look around.

O'Reilly bought out the regional Murray's chain about a decade ago. I don't like them as much as I did Murray's, but my other nearby choices are Auto Zone and Advance. O'Reilly usually has what I need in stock, but not necessarily at competitive prices. For anything expensive, I'll check all three stores on-line, then decide where to go.
