Newbie with John Deere VanBrunt questions

I have inherited a Van Brunt 13 row drill. It is in need of some help, but it seems to function.
The seed and fertilizer boxes need a bit of repair, it needs several seed tubes, and the biggest issue is that I have never used it before.
When I disengage the disks, they lock in an upward position. When I release them, to they drop down but both sides dig for a bit and one side raises and drops, then the other side does the same.
I am fairly sure that they should stay down and only raise when I disengage them, am I correct?
If so:
1 how do I correct this?
If not;
1 should they be in time together, of separately as they are now?

How do I figure what model it is? It is a 13 row. All other info is scattered to the 4 winds.
Thanks y'all![/u]

To answer your first question, the "power lift" mechanisms are dirty/sticky inside and are not latching properly in the desired position when the trip rope is released. APPARENTLY, from your description of how it is operating, it has two power lifts, and, YES, they would operate independently.

I believe the Operator's Manual suggests squirting kerosene or diesel fuel into them to free up the mechanism, once loose, IRC, there's a couple a Zerks to grease, don't overdue it.

John Deere took over Van Brunt in the EARLY 1900's, so you have a John Deere/Van Brunt drill, and you can still get on operator's manual from DEERE (1-800-522-7448 ), or maybe find one on ebay, once you know the model.

If you don't see in I.D. tag, can you post a couple of photos down on Implement Alley or The DEERE-specific Forum below, likely someone will be able to I.D. it so you know what manual to order.

Probably need to take the power lift mechanisms apart and clean them for best results. They will be packed with dry
grease and dirt. I had to on one I had.

I've got a rather dumb question about most all grain drills? Why do grain drills have an odd number of rows?

They don't always have an odd number of rows.

As ONE example, DEERE made the "LLA" series in BOTH 24 X 6 (24 openers, 6" spacing), and 24 X 7 (24 openers, 7" spacing), configurations.

Back in the day of new JD/Van Brunt Model B plain grain drills came in even number of seed openings & Model FB,FB-A & FB-B came in odd number seed openings. I have no idea why the difference in opening #s. Other models were built but I'm not very familiar with them
