trying to get an appt up at mayo clinic in rochester mn. its about a 6 hr drive from illinois. i can take i 90 to madison wisconsin, then up to lacross wi and then west to rochester, or go i-80 west to davenport ia, then 380/63 north to rochester. weather wise, which route would be safer? i just saw on the news a big accident up near hayward wiscon on the interstate. not sure but i kinda think maybe the iowa route would be safer weather-travel wise. what to you fellers think?

Farmall Plowboy,

Iowa and Minnesota have the same in-coming storm... looks to cover a large area.

Which day are you traveling? It looks like the US 63 route includes close to 100 miles of two lane highway with no big towns between New Hampton, IA and Rochester, MN. MN puts a very high priority on snow plowing its Interstate highways. I think I would take the I-90 route and adjust the departure time to suit the weather.

You really do not want to drive up 63 from Iowa, a lot of two lane and plenty of space to drift in.

Bottom line, there is not really a good way to get to Rochester through Iowa.

Just got home four Pine Island, MN, 15 miles north of Rochester at 2:30 this afternoon. Visiting daughter and family over weekend and stayed an extra night. Near whiteout conditions most of yesterday morning. Roads, MN 52, I 90, and I 94 were clear all the way to Waukesha. Wet spots here and there, used 3/4 gallon of washer fluid. That area is supposed to get socked again tonight with 6 to 8 inches and still another round on Thursday. Watch the forecast. Good luck and be safe!

Cedar Rapids got 8 inches last night NE Iowa about 10", do not know about Wisconsin, but assume they got nailed.
