Gun cabinet lock

What's best way to get in my son's locked gun cabinet? He lost key & would like to
get his bow out. Can you drill out starting with small bit, working your way to big
bit, or somehow pick lock?

I agree with this method. If this doesn't work go on YouTube on how to pick one of these simple locks. There will probably be a teenager showing you a simple way to get into anything. Did that for two different kinds of combination locks and was disgusted to see how easy they were to open.

If you can get anything flat inside that hole, you may be able to turn it counter clockwise while pulling slightly toward you. The nut that holds it on (inside) may just unscrew. MAY is the key word. What's the hinge look like? Can you whittle away at that?

You might try picking the lock. Fold out a paper clip so that one side makes a pin and insert it into the lock and feel for the pins on the side. Then take a small screw driver to where you can turn the lock to put a little pressure on the pins. Then while holding pressure wiggle the paper clip around until it pushes the pins back when all of them are pushed back sufficient the lock should open.

If you have purchased the gun case recently you might contact them and tell them you have lost the key. Chances are they didn't put very many different locks on the cabinets. They are really not for security, it's more intended to keep young children out.

If all else fails break the glass, it shouldn't cost very much to replace a piece of glass.

What the others say about drilling... We have a glass door cabinet at work where someone shoved a flat blade screw driver in the lock and turned it with a crescent wrench and the barrel of the lock spun in the wood hole as the wood was not real hard. People then used a screw driver for a long time before it was replaced. Just sayin but I would use the least damaging method first.

Look on YouTube under picking a cabinet lock, just found a couple of good videos that show how to pick a filing cabinet lock which is the same lock.

That is a very low security lock.

Just about any key that will go in, with a little wiggling and turning will open it.

Or the whole thing may turn in the door.

Rkh,

I don't know what the cabinet's worth, but maybe break the glass, then undo and replace the lockset?

Not meant to be smarty-pantsed,

D.

If you have a little idea of how they work, That one is easy to pick. use one skinny tool(L shaped) to apply a little turn pressure and another to slide in and push pins down, one at a time.

As Roger said typically those locks are not to well made. Usually there is a nut on the backside that threads onto the barrel. Because it?s in wood and the wood expands and contracts the flat screw driver and crescent wrench would probably be my first try. I would go easy at first to see if it will move. Most likely it will.
