What is this

I few weeks ago I posted a picture of a tool I accrued, and asking for help identifying it. My grandson works in a machine shop, and one of the senior machinists
told him it was a chuck to be used in a lath, either in the head or mounted in the tailstock. Probability built in the 20's. Found pictures in an old Southbend
book.

Thanks to those who responded.

showcrop; I can't say whether deertails meant to say acquired, but considering the way most of us here collect tools addictively, accrued works, too.

I have 2 smaller versions of that type of chuck. One made in France and one in Connecticut USA. The one made on the USA has a Reid s patent date of 1880. --- John
