Anyone have issue with center post tire changer sticking on the return cycle? Have to put the iron on top post that turns and help it make a full return. Have tried to Lub everything possible but some help but not like it should be. If you been into one of these things please comment.

Check the return springs. There should be a spring on each side of the ram that breaks the bottom bead. I have seen these break.

Both are still there and hooked up. It just seems like it needs greased but can't find anywhere to do it that does anything to improve things. Thanks.

We had several of those over the years in the tire shop. Get the WD 40, p b blaster, or your choice of light lube oil and lube the top of the shaft liberally. Take the front and back off the machine and spray lube everything you can see. Most of the time it seemed to be dirt buildup in the shaft and a real good lube fixed it.

It has been 25 years since I worked on 1. I think I remember an exhaust muffler that is made out of brass. They occasionally get plugged up from the inside. I have used carb cleaner and compresses air to clean them up for a temp fix. Watch your eyes, it didn't matter where I held that thing when I blew them out, the darn stuff blew into one or both eyes. Good luck with it. I wore out several of them. We went to John Bean machines. Similar looking but lasted a lot longer.

LeakyBoot,

My 40-40A is also sticking on the return cycle. I'm hoping you found a solution by now... please let me know!

This center post.

Pull it out of the machine, clean it with Emory cloth and clean the bore. While it is out use a straight edge and check that it is not bent. If all is well. Lube it with a good grease and reinstall it.

Check all of the moving parts for binding. If none is found. Lube everything good.

Check the valve. Make sure that it is not gunked up with oil, dirt and such. Especially the exhaust port.

This one has been in my shop since the 70's. We rarely use it now days since it will only handle 16" and smaller tires. I have known it to fail. But it has been disassembled once a year for cleaning and lube since it was new.

Pull it out of the machine,...

THANK YOU, Mule Meat! 😁👍
I've tried to figure it out, but need some help... how do you pull the post out? 🤔

Pull it out of the machine...

How do you access the roll pin to release the center shaft?
Anyone know?

Ok. I got access to the roll pin by removing the small and large lower shoes, and with a 24" x 1/4" metal rod I was able to reach the roll pin and tap it out. However, the center post still is resisting any effort to "pull it out of the machine".

I then noticed #20 on the parts diagram... a key for the pinion gear. I'm guessing this may be the issue?

So, I'm at a standstill again and would appreciate any help anyone can offer. I've spent hours searching online and have not been able to come up with information on breaking down this 40-40a so I can clean and lubricate the center post.

Please and thank you!

Tried to post photos in my previous message, but my message kept getting rejected if I included images.

You're too new to post images. This is to keep spammers from creating accounts and flooding the site with images. Make a few more posts and you can post images.

Also it is bad form to reply to a post that is years old, with your own question. What usually happens is people don't notice the date, think it is a new question, and respond to the original post. Yours at the end gets totally ignored. That's why it's better to start a new thread even though your question is related.
