It is a gas heater. The pilot light was out. We hope that it was just a wind gust that blew it out.

Yup that is what I was going to tell him. When pilots keep going out that is usually the hint of a problem. You can pull out the burner assembly and take an air hose and blow all of the crap out of the burner and pilot assembly. One note. If it is a whirlpool from around 2003 you will have a Very hard time gettting a pilot for it. They have a lefthand nut on the thermal couple. I cut the little copper sheath and soldered a new couple bulb onto the old assembly. She has been working dandy for almost a year now.

A plumbing tech had told me that it might be the thermo-coupler. If it goes out again, that is the next fix.

Yep, generally when they finally quit, momma is trying to get the babies washed up on Saturday night, and it is going to cost you a service call and the part cost, and however long it takes the service man to respond. Get a spare. Most anyone can replace it. With youtube as your friend. Shelf life of an inexpensive thermocouple is nearly unlimited. there are several types if I remember right. At least several lengths. A longer one of the same type will work fine, just don't need to uncoil it all the way.
Back when furnaces also needed them, I got one that would work on both. Now the only one on the place is for the shop furnace.

Dang it! I read the original post on this topic yesterday morning, nothing more. This morning wife hollars down to me "No Hot Water". Relight the pilot light, turn burner on thinking ( hoping) it works. Go back down 5 minutes later and it's out again.

Service guy due here in a couple hours.

Next time you old farts have common household problems keep it to yourself!!!
