Tool of the day

When I built our shop I reinforce the trusses so I could have this little hoist, it sure is handy! It's a 1 ton chain fall, but I probably would never lift over 1000 pounds. I built the trolley using 6005 ball bearings for wheels, so it rolls nice. I use it for changing tires on motorcycles and sharpening lawn mower blades mostly.

Hello Russ from MN,

HECK YEA! That certainly qualifies as tool of the day. The fact that was hand made is just icing on the cake!!!

Nice!

That is a really good way to change riding mower blades. Had a set up like that out at my Moms, but it didn't roll, just tied to the ceiling joist.

Just hoist the front up, reach under and change them.

No jack in the way!

Very nice, clean and neat. Much prettier than mine. Kinda embarrassed to show mine. But it works.
I built mine and added a 10 foot long 1/2" thread rod powered my a small motor I salvaged from a garage door opener.
With a reversing switch I can trolley the hoist forward and reverse.
Very handy to pick up heavy mowers and tillers and set them on the work table.

I know a man in 1940 built a shop to work on his semis. He used a 12 inch I beam and a 4k chain hoist on a dolly. It takes forever pulling on the chain to lift things. Nothing it can't lift.

My next door neighbor has a really nice pole barn with a 10' piece of 1 5/8" Unistrut embedded into the ceiling. It also has a roller like yours but not quite as heavy duty. He has a chainfall attached to it to work on his zero turn mower. Very handy!
