Osburn Fireplaces

I am planning to replace me wood burning fireplace next summer, as the firebox ceramic is cracking and it is not air tight.

I am looking at the Osburn air tight fireplace with the optional interconnect into my HVAC system. I want the airtight with external combustion air to decrease my wood usage and air infiltration caused by need for combustion air. I also want to hook it into my return air ducting so that my living room is not super hot and rest of house cold.

Any experience with these?

I am looking at the Horizon model.

David G, does the Horizon model have the air tubes in the top of the fire box? I have run an Osburn insert since fall of 2007 (2400 model I think). After second year needed to replace two of those as well as door latch parts. It is also hard to control the burn rate by adjusting the air intake as you can't close the air off enough. Maybe the Horizon model is different in that regard, I don't know.

I liked the older Lopi it replaced a lot better but after 25+ years it was worn out and an overfire incident didn't help any so it needed replaced (along with a flue liner installed). Long story of a bad day on that one - had the local fire departments excited anyway. They hadn't seen fire coming six feet out of a chimney for awhile!! Paul
