trailer brake away brakes

Back in the late 90s I bought a new 16' land scape type trailer from TSC, it had tandem axels with brakes with break-away system.
After a few years I wondered how the battery was so I brought it inside for the winter. When I brought it in I checked the voltage, and it was good.
I used that trailer for a couple more years, then bought a new 20' flat bed trailer, same axels and weight rating. The new one had a button one the battery box you could push and check the voltage of the battery.
Both trailers had a 12 volt battery the size of a 6 volt lantern battery.
The new break-away system would charge the battery while in use. But it discharges the battery when not in use, unless I remember to unplug in when not in use.
Is this typical, or is there something wrong with it?

Shouldn't drain, but it may just be a defective battery. I'd unhook the battery cables and see if it still discharges.

Something is wrong if it discharges when connected.

There should be a diode that keeps the battery from back feeding to the vehicle. If that is bad, and there is corrosion in the trailer plug, or the actuator switch it could be draining there.

Look everything over, double check the wiring, look for corrosion bridging any connections.

What are you "unhooking?"

If you have to unhook the battery from the trailer, look at the breakaway switch. It's the only thing that would be connected to anything drawing power.

If you are not confident or have questions try taking your trailer to
a good trailer sales and service joint. They know what to look for and
can diagnose it a lot quicker than you messing with it. Shouldn't be
that expensive. You can have bad ground connections, ground to trailer
or in the harness. Bad diode as was stated. Corrosion some place. Just
on and on.
