Brazing

Ok, I've been told that you cannot weld with oxy propane setups. My question is , can you braze using the fluxed bronze rods with oxy propane? I'm out of acetylene and have a propane set up on the shelf and would be happy to wait till spring before getting a new tank of acetylene. I know I've done it before but never with anything that was under much stress. I need to braze a cast iron bracket for a woodlathe tool rest for a friend and don't want it to break for him. So what are your experiences here?

I dont use propane but likely will be switching when my current tank lease runs out. It is pretty common knowledge that propane OK for cutting and brazing but not for welding steel.

I have brazed a lot of cast with Mapp gas, but not propane

I broke a cast bracket that holds a fuel injector into the block. Why it was made of cast is beyond me, other than that the tractor was made in France. I was pretty sure brazing wouldn't be strong enough, but it held! I'm sold on brazing with propane.

Propane is dirty compared to acetylene, so you will get contaminants in the welding. If your joint does not require a perfect braze you will be fine. If you are already struggling with contaminants of some kind it can be enough extra to cause trouble.
